Biiiiig two pot calipers???

Postby RedMist » Wed Mar 28, 2007 11:36 am

Pre 96 rally regs force me to discard the 4 pot brakes on the front of the celica. I'm forced to go 2 pot, but want to ensure that I have a the best replacement for the beautiful 4 pots currently on the car. Anyone know of a suitable large 2 pot slider brake caliper that I can use on the existing vented disks?

2.5 Brakes
No four pot front brake calipers
No adjustable pedal boxes.

Buggar.

I need to modify them anyway. I cant fit 15 inch rims on them and 16 inch rally tyres are non-existant.

what size are the stock disks also what is the mounting sizes

hole-hole & draw a string line from hole-hole & measure to the top of pads (take it you new that)

also are you resturcted to a slider because i know of 2 good posablitys if you can use 2 pot solids
The faster you go the quicker you get there

ST185 GT4 run OK sized 2 pots.
Mazda Eunos 800's run fairly large twin pot calipers
BG Legacy GT Twin Turbo's run twin pot fronts are about the same as GT4

what size is the factory disc? cause i dont think you'll be able to fit 2 pots and your std discs into a 15 inch rim

ST205 disks are 315mm, however I'll have to cut that down in order to fit the 15's anyway. As such I'll just modify it to suit the calipers.
Is the ST185 twin pot a slider? or a pot either side?
It may pay for me to just swap the 185 disk and caliper onto my 205.

I had thought that a 2 pot slider would give you more pad surface. Am I incorrect?

A slider should give you more pad area, but probably less piston area.

Biggest piston 2 pot sliders that I know of would be '92+ SW20, or ST215. Earlier model SW20, and probably ST185's have slightly smaller pistons.

The ST185 is exactly the same as ST165. twin pots or single.
Twin pots a fitted to 254mm rotors, while single is fitted to either 254mm (ST165) or 277mm (ST185). Single pot from ST165 is exactly the same as single from 185, only difference are the brackets.
As far as I am aware you cannot fit twin pots to 277mm rotor without modifications. The ST185/165 have 54mm spigot while ST205 have 55mm (from memory), also ST205 have completely different mounting position for callipers (they don't come with brackets), ST205 rotors also have different "offset".

What about Altezza's (RS200) they use twin pot sliders and look pretty big to me.

The 15" wheel ones are the same pad size as the non-superstrut ST202, the 16" ones are the same as the JZA80, but you might have problems fitting those under a 15" rim

The superstrut suspension is gone. As such the hubs, arms and struts are (or will be very shortly) from the ST206. Arms fit at the very least.

Sorry my stupidity, Brain fade day. Calipers and disks from the ST206 are tiny.

I have done research on that subject and I can tell there are only 2 types of brakes on ST185:
Big rotors and single pot.
Small rotors and twin pot.

As far as I know facelift and widebody came with big single, others came with twin smaller.
BDA book is sometimes innacurate. As well as other aftermarket parts books.
(listing wrong rotors and pads for my ST165).
