Turboing my Celica???

Postby muppet » Thu Mar 29, 2007 11:45 am

At the moment I own a St202 Celica and like it, but I also like the GT4's better, but I don't want the 4wd sytem of the GT4.

Question is how easy is it to slap a turbo on my Celica and get it all hooked up, does the wiring need to be modified, and what parts would be need and mods done to the engine?

Buy a GT4.. easier, more cost effective and less problems

It's a bit of a vague question...

You can put a turbo on anything, it all depends on what you want from it.

Some guys go to forced induction to fill a torque hole, some go for more top end power. This can determine what size and sort of turbo you need and what work your engine needs done to it.

It will depend on how much you want to spend, how much power you want and how reliable you want it to be.

You could buy a GT-4 and just drive it, easy as.

You could put a 3SGTE motor in it and get that going, a lot more work involved.

You could put a turbo on your existing motor and go from there. It should handle a low boost application no worries, but it would come down to how you are going to tune it. You could use aftermarket ECU, or piggy backs, or Factory ECU with "Tricks".
Work involved in this option is varied...

It's all been done before in one way or another with varying degrees of success.

What's your goal? A power amount, or a set budget (eg $5000 max).

Haynes: Five spanner rating (expert).
Translation: OK - but don't expect us to ride it afterwards!!!
Translation #2: Don't ever carry your loved ones in it again and don't mention it to your insurance company.

Why would bother doing that?? You'd still have all the rear diff etc in place.
I'd saying putting a 3SGTE in there would be the most cost effective way, turboing the 3SGE properly will get quite costly fast.

Yep.
That'd be a waste of a GT4 too.

There are guys that have put a 3SGTE into their Celicas or Currens and they go mint. Even with the motor in stock form, they will perform so much better than the 3SGE. Then you could always modify it 8)

i think it would be easyer to put a 3sgte into the car if you really want a FWD turbo, but to be fair why not get a starlet? Turbo FWD and by the time you compare the power to weight youd be about on par?

We put a turbo on Mum's corona years and years ago,

was a 3SFE Carb version, converted it to EFI and ran 7psi on the standard engine. Main problem we had was trying to get a clutch to hold it.
A new Hilux clutch lasted 15 mins into the 3 hour enduro.
We put it back to normal as back then ( before the link LEM V1 even)
the aftermarket ECU made it run like shit and it was still mum's road car.

So if you are after a bit more power, and dont want to go the whole engine conversion,
get a turbo manifold made and dont even touch the rest of the engine.
That way you won't have to bugger round with
engine mounts, alt mounts, power steer pumps etc etc.
Just use the standard wiring loom and adapt a Link onto the ecu end of it,
and run low boost.

IMO easier than an engine swap.

3sgte, and get an mr2 box and move the shifter cables to the other side.

*EDIT* 3sgte should also fit the existing mounts

I wonder if my brother would let me borrow his Corona for a couple of weeks hehehe. Would make for a good surprise.

 i remember that
i also remember you saying ya mum refused to drive it untill it was put back to normal

but yeah
2 options i reckon
either do as matt suggests

or convert to 3sgte

all comes down to $$ and how much power etc you want

for fwd i reckon a stock 3sgte will be plenty.

Yep, either way when you've done it, put it in the projects section, to let all marvel in the fruits of your labour.

Having said that, I should really get onto my own turbo project and put some piccys in the project section as well.
Shame on me for procrastinating

What's superstrut got to do with gearbox mounts? Last time I looked, my gearbox wasn't bolted onto my struts :?

It seems a bit odd really, Toyota's are normally excellent for being able to mix and match parts, let alone bits being from the same model number.
