KE30 Diff Identification

Postby jeremiahnz » Mon Apr 16, 2007 11:06 am

Hey,

I have a bent axle in my KE30 and am looking at getting a replacement diff. I know there are number of different types for the ke30's but cannot find any identification on the actual diff. Can someone tell me how I go about identifying what diff code it is and what I actually measure to get the size?

The diff is in a 1976 KE30 and I believe it to be original.

Cheers

Interesting... I did check the plate and didn't think I saw it there. I'll clean my glasses and check again. Does that give an indication of the size as I believe there is 5.7" 6.0" or some other variations. I am pretty much just going to try and buy a replacement whole diff so I don't know how much this matters, but want to make sure I am getting something that fits.

It won't on an NZ assembled model unfortunately.

I think the KE30's use a 6" U code centre.

Sweet, that makes sense then. I was pretty sure I'd checked properly :)

While on the subject of these diffs, has anyone got any good tips for removing the axles without a slide hammer? I have unbolted everything put in old rim and and tried to bash the back of it with a mate to pop the axle out but it just wouldn't budge. Due to time constraints I am now looking at the option of replacing the full diff but in anyone have any good tips I may try the axles again.

Ok, may give that a shot. The axle isn't broken, just the plate on the end that the wheel studs come out of is slightly bent (disagreement with curb) so what you suggested may work.

changing the whole assembly is relatively easy(need to bleed the breaks though).had a crack at changing just the head without proper tools didnt get very far.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat - just standard tools. Only thing now is finding a whole rear end relatively quickly (this week)

as far as I know the only major difference between ke3# series diff heads was with the axles/diff heads. if you get replacement axles and diff head from the one car you should be sweet leaving your current diff housing in there.

ive got a diff head and axles at my dads, already all packed up ready to be shipped (was going to sell them to another guy but he changed his mind). just if you get stuck...

otherwise ive got another ke35 diff housing with just the axles here...not sure what model they're out of though but if anyone can tell me what the actual differences are between the different axles I can do some measuring for you to see if mine match...

the majority of ke3 are U series diffs.
axles are different lengths between ke2, ke3 and ke7. ke2 are shortest, ke7 are longest. kp61 are similar but some have a different bolt pattern on the end of the housing so no guarantees they interchange. get a ke3 axle and have no worries :) U series heads are interchangeable but watch for ones with longer studs as you'll need to swap the longer stud with the diff head.

once upon a time i managed to get an axle out by using scissor jacks between the rim and suspension parts. need to use two jacks to push out evenly otherwise the rim twists. is rather crude. or put an old disk on the axle and hammer it to death.
then i made me a slide hammer haha! first one was a c&*t to use but 2nd one is good
