I guess thats one way to replace mounts for a live rear axle!

That is uuuuugly. A single 3.0 on each corner would have given a considerably better damp and probably overkill for whatever he's using it for.
Multiple shocks these days are pretty much dead. Unless you want to run more than one bypass and are forced to go external. Then its your bypass shock and a spring carrying shock. Even Rod Millens "hillclimb" truck is a single shock per corner machine.

For a 4wd its not unusual to run dual shocks on each side for the pounding they can get offroad, and the 3 extra on top of the diff to dampen axel wrap is an interesting idea, however in that thing, there is most likely no point
