auckland to get 10c petrol hike

Postby deaf_rattle » Wed Apr 25, 2007 10:01 am

This is so stupid. It should be nationwide as its going to help alot more people than just aucklanders.
I really hope there is something done about this.

Stupid good for nothing councils

before you southerners start getting anti auckland, dont please keep this thread on topic

http://nz.news.yahoo.com/070424/3/d2x.html

Aucklanders will be hit with a 10 cent tax on every litre of petrol to pay for the regions roads and trains, it was tipped today.

The Auckland region will be given the go-ahead to introduce a fuel tax in an announcement understood to form part of the Government's Budget, the New Zealand Herald reports today.

A third of the tax, 3.5c, would be used for the electrification of Auckland's suburban trains.

The rest of the tax would help pay for Rodney District Council's link-road between Whangaparaoa Peninsula and the Northern Motorway, and for completing the Manukau-Waterview western ring route.

A 10c-a-litre levy would add $6 to the cost of filling an average 60-litre tank.

The paper said a fuel tax could also be introduced in Wellington -- although to a lesser extent -- and other regions would be able to request the right to tax for transport infrastructure.

The $560 million electrification plan for Auckland rail has been the subject of lengthy deliberation in the Beehive. It is thought the Government wants the region to control the new levy - so the Beehive is not seen as directly increasing fuel taxes to pay for new transport projects.

It is understood fuel companies have been kept informed about the regional tax plan and are bracing for a 10c--a-litre levy in Auckland, the paper says. A previous attempt at a regional fuel tax to finance public transport proved unpopular. In 1993, regional councils were given the power to raise a 2c-a-litre petrol tax.

But it was so unpopular that it lapsed within three years.

dont get me started hick boy.
you need to realise that if the roads are better in auckland(and through auckland) that the whole country benifits.

this would help with education as well, so people like you could be able to read comments like "before you southerners start getting anti auckland, dont please keep this thread on topic "

you will have a hard time not buying anything that comes through or from auckland.
majority of nzs taxes comes from auckland, yet alot of that goes to benifit all of nz.. not just auckland.

I beg to differ, if Auckland was nuked, we'd all have a party & either Wellington or Tauranga would become the new port of choice for imports & exports (as Tauranga allready is for exports) & as an added benifit we'd all hear less whining.

And i remember about 3 years ago all of us having to pay 10c a litre more for petrol so Auckland could have better roads. Now i didnt hear Aucklanders complaining that this was unfair. How is it fair that someone who lives in Dunedin (like i do) pays for roads in Auckland i dont even use everytime i fill up. They did a brakedown of the 10c a litre levy somewhere & 8c of the levy goes to Auckland & 2c for the rest of the country!

Also another 10c a litre for the whole country is political suicide, whereas Aucklanders will get over it in a few weeks when they find something else to moan about

if you remember correctly, that 10c tax was for nz roads, not just auckland roads and it was and is still being used for things like hip hop tours and other non roading activities.

Yet we didnt moan, because we saw the bigger picture.
i think you would find life alot harder if auckland became a replublic and all of aucklands tax stayed in auckland.

less whinning you reckon? if a southerner comes up to auckland he doesnt get mocked by every shop and petrol station he goes to for being a southerner.

Yet turn the table and send an aucklander down south. the minute you tell them you are from auckland the shit starts to fly.

Mind you nothing better to do down there i guess.

anyway

I vote mr30's ignorant, irrelevant, offtopic, and inflamatory posts be removed (can you tell I'm pissed about the cricket? haha).

I'm sure we've had petrol price rises before in the name of public transport.. what happened to them? This is just ludicrous, especially as it's auckland only. And they wonder why people move overseas? The cost of living in the major centre in NZ is out of control.

This is in cents per litre:

Does anyone know what the excise tax is used for? Just a general tax into the govt's pockets?

An increase of 10c/L will push the price of 91 to $1.619/L, and the tax portion of that graph will grow to almost 47%. Thats nuts, I'm sure they can just reorganise which parts of the 43% tax they already take go where and make up 10c from every litre to go to those roading projects (in auckland area only).

I don't mind paying for the western ring route, or the whangaparaoa-northern link (even though I never go to manukau or whangaparaoa) but I don't think they should add more tax for it. I have no proof of this but I would say probably 50% of aucklanders won't use those roads either, simply because they're in areas they never/rarely have to go to.

i think this system is just a big have any way just like the fuel dockets ie: fuel went up 3 cents fuel dockets came out for 4 cents off fuel went up another 8 cents fuel dockets came out for 10c fuel went down 4 cents fuel dockets went back to 4 cents any one see the picture

also i to see no point in paying for auckland roads why do they just give old helen clark a smaller peace of the tax money alreary colected & use that money

Only old people use those vouchers!

This will suck, i would never use the new proposed roads or the train and i live in Auckland.

Either all of NZ should pay or the users. Not just because i live close ie within 1hr drive of the new propositions.

lol, great idea.

As for the rest of new zealand being screwed without Auckland... hmmm yeah. Would you complain if Christchurch city council wanted funding for a new road that none of you will drive on and expected you to pay 10c/litre more?

yeah in Australia, a petrol station that accepts vouchers is 4c dearer than a petrol station that doesn't accept vouchers.... its just a big con thats all.

Yea its just the southerners being unreasonable. *Ponders how Aucklanders would react if Dunedin/CHCH caused an increase in the cost of living*
