So the pre 1996 frontal impact law is turning into the 2002 emissions law as of 01/01/08/.

This will rule out a lot of good cars coming into the country. As well as micro dotting, making firewall chops impossible, is this the end of good imports in NZ?

I think this is especially bad for anyone (like me) wanting to buy Jap import small truck. A cheap truck will be a heap of junk, and a new truck 2002+, so mega bucks. No body will sell a moderatly affordable truck (ie one currently worth 15-20k), or they'l want heaps for it because theres such demand.

Pros and cons...?

This will put a lot of dealers(importers) out of business, will increase prices to stupidity, also will age the fleet of vehicles, thus creating more pollution, because people will not be able to afford "not so old" vehicles (basically under 10yo).
Although some people think that putting importers out of business is not a big deal, who likes car dealers anyway? Right? Wrong!
These importers create jobs for mechanics, panel beaters, groomers, auto electricians, they pay taxes, fees, rent, gst, they spend a lot of money on advertisement. Other industry which will take a hit is finance.

Very bad move from Helen. As far as I understand she want to get in to UN, so she is doing what seems to be right. NZ never had any problems with pollution, there is no smog, acid rain or anything like in other countries.

There is a problem of a big number of vehicles in NZ, but this move is not a solution - instead government needs to invest in real public transport.

BTW I work in car import industry.

I think what she should be doing is getting decend diesel. Japans diesel is about 8ppm sulphur, ours is about 50-80ppm! That would save NZ plenty of the carbon credits Helen is trying to save

To be fair, once you see what the rest of the world is doing as far as emissions testing you realise that NZ's is a joke. I mean we're pushing this image of clean and green and yet the first thing you can do when you purchase a new car is rip ALL of the emissions control equipment off.

Now I am not saying this is a bad thing :lol: or debating how significant our emissions are to, say, China's. However we have to reconcile this with the image we want to present to the rest of the world.

If we do want to push the price of cars up through doing this we'd better have some decent public transport sorted to back it up.

Ehh can't complain, the weather is better than I was expecting haha. Racing is RIDICULOUSLY expensive here though! Track day will cost you GBP150 - NZ$400 or so.

You went with the BEAMS motor???

Yeah I guess the whole emissions rules come down to where we think the line should be drawn between the image we want to present and keeping as much of the backyard engineering spirit that NZ is known for.

If it's to try eliminate emissions with cars.. They should focus on the old shitters first.
The cops should be pulling up and pink stickering the old smokey cars, I cant can't the number of old liteaces, datsuns, etc i've seen putting out enough smoke to look like a forest fire.

That new law will push up car prices quite a bit, i heard about it a few months ago from a friends dad whos a car dealer, but i never thought it would come through.

Why not just tighten up the emmissions law.

The largest problem will be companies using really old trucks rather than buying newer ones. We will see these 20 year old trucks around more.

exactly. they need to test at wof/cof time and get the shitters off the road, this will see people repairing peices of crap

I don't think it's been finalised yet....
but yuh. importing has brought the cost of vehicles down alot over the last 15 years, so that almost anyone can own a mint, late model car. That said, there's a lot of rogues bringing out absolute pieces of crap, which taint the importing market.

I think sergei is bang on the money - looking at the graph towards the bottom - it shows a spike in 2002, when the frontal impact law was bought in, of the fleet aging and it's continuing - this law will only exagerate this trend further.

Thus people will hold onto their pre 2002 "environment destructing shitters" for longer.......
