going from c52 to e51

Postby gasman » Mon May 21, 2007 7:45 pm

wanting to get a aw11 4agze e51 gearbox to fit my blacktop 20v which currently has a c52. will i need to get a new flywheel and clutch setup to make it work?

im guessing i will need drive shafts and cv joints but from what car?
and i wont need to get new hubs right?

OK this is from what i understand...............The blacktops come with the c56 box, the silvertop ones came with the c52 and some with the c56. You should stick with your box being a c52 or 56 as the c series have better ratios. Unless you are going to turbo your car or something around those lines im taking the same rout myself but im turboing my engine so wont put my e51 box in untill i get it going.

Yes you will need the shafts and cv to fit.......you shouldnt need to change your hubs. For the clutch i just went to trade parts and told them i wanted a clutch plate that would fit in the blacktop flywheel and be splined for the e51 box and they handed me a exedy unit. Better to go this way as you get to keep the lighter flywheel.

how much power are you planning on making?

do you like to shift smoothly? the e series boxes are all pretty old, and nearly all of them have stuffed synchros. if you're prepared to rebuild a box properly that can be sorted tho. also ,the ratios are quite long and theres a huge gap between 2nd and 3rd gear. bazda ended up using a mix/match selection of ratios from mr2 and corollas to help keep the ratios closer and improve his 1/4 mile time.
the advantage is they are pretty strong internally, but if you're going to be less than 150wkw then i reckon the c series is the way to go anyway. i know of c series gearboxes that have lasted well behind a turbo'ed engine with only a little bit of mechanical sympathy.

planning for about 210kw-230kw
got my home made launch controller going, so may flatshift between gears at the drags. but that is how i stuffed my my other c52 box but that already had a massivly fooked sinchro already.

Ive just done this to my car. But I used a box from a ae101 so didnt need modding.

Needed new flywheel, clutch and pressure plate, and the driveshafts.

Didnt have to change hubs, and Im still using the same slave cylinder.
