Better torque/weight gives more of a punch at the start, and the silvertops don't seem to make any (or substantially) more power than blue tops.... so not too odd a concept.

Actually, have to correct you here Lith. I went from a stock bigport to a stock silvertop in my race car, and picked up nearly 10kmh down every straight at Manfeild. That's a very decent increase in oomph for a motor that cost me $500. Got another two seconds a lap out of it easily, which is heaps for such a cheap mod.
The big port did give a more grunty feel, as Skoty reckoned. But the silvertop was quicker, while feeling a lot more effortless about the whole affair.
