20 Valves really that bad?

I've noticed across the forums for quite some time that 20 valve 4ages always get criticised whenever someone mentions them. Are they really that bad mechanically or is it that people who own them think they are the quickest thing on the road? Sorry if it has already been covered before, just want to know what the whole deal is :)

No its more to do with the fact that young guys buy them, and then think they're the fastest things ever.
They're bloody good wee cars, but they're not massively powerful

I think the biggest problem is toyota put them in a relatively heavy car, at least compared to the older 4age models.

Better torque/weight gives more of a punch at the start, and the silvertops don't seem to make any (or substantially) more power than blue tops.... so not too odd a concept.

Actually, have to correct you here Lith. I went from a stock bigport to a stock silvertop in my race car, and picked up nearly 10kmh down every straight at Manfeild. That's a very decent increase in oomph for a motor that cost me $500. Got another two seconds a lap out of it easily, which is heaps for such a cheap mod.

The big port did give a more grunty feel, as Skoty reckoned. But the silvertop was quicker, while feeling a lot more effortless about the whole affair.

In my opinion its like VTec when someone mentions it the critisism flows. And there is noting wrong with Vtec so in turn there is nothing wrong with 20v's.

I think it partly comes down to the sheer number of 20v owners too. So the potential amount of bragging is greater than a car that hardly anyone owns..

I mean is there really anything wrong with currens? :lol: or mr2s? its all personal opinion I guess. The are relatively cheap to buy, compared to a lot of similar year performance orientated cars, so you do get more people buying them, and so a big proportion of drop kicks do buy them.

mechanically they are just as reliable as any other toyota engine. I think when they do break, its often due to poor maintenance.

20valves are awesome if you dont want the quickest thing on the road, I just think its funny when you can tell a young first time 20 valve owner

I didn't say it wasn't faster, was talking sheer power etc. Funny - what you say there backs up something I said in a thread on NZHondas and was slammed for.... but compare a few dyno days and you'll find there is very little power difference between blue tops and silvertops, at least if the results are consistant with what I've seen.

The difference starts coming into the power delivery, 20vs seem to keep delivering it - even if its not rising heaps and becoming stratospheric.... it delivers well over a wide rev range. The more time you spend accelerating well, the faster you can go perhaps?

I've lined up a friend ('93 FXGT) on the motorway with a 10kph pull to 100kph. With me in my '90 FXGT (smallport). I get the jump, but he starts to pull away from me and by the time its 100kph hes a good car or two lengths infront of me. I know its not scientific, but just my input : )

if i had a silvertop that wasnt putting out any more power than a bluetop id have a good hard look at what was wrong with it.

sure they dont have the 160ish as adertised when new.
but they sure as hell have more than a 110ish hp bluetop.

when TVIS switchs at about 4000rpm they can feel like they are taking off (relativly speaking! :lol: )

And you have to admit after driving a blacktop, the earlier VVT and slight differences do make a large amount of difference in the feel of power they have.

I think I recall someone (Was it RedMist?) that the 20v has cross-flow issues.

Other than that, they're not a bad engine really.

I think its like what people have said where some people tend to think they're the fastest things on the road.

Not to say they can't be quick. Look at the Group A silvertops! Mean!

All in all though, I prefer the 16v's, I think I'm just more of a traditionalist :P
