noticed a mad knocking noise, thought it was a big end bearing but the crank pulley is not spinning so not charging alt or spining water pump.

What would this be? does it go into a keyway?

And yeah, i'd say u've killed the keyway.

Take it off and have a look, and see if you can repair it with chemiweld or something (easy option).

Would be better to take it to an engine reconditioners who repair crank snouts without taking the engine out.

Yup, defintly true. But if its not 2 bad, like maybe the key broke into pieces and didnt do much damage, you could get away with putting a new key in, and a bit of something around it to take up the slack.

Just it depends on the car and how rough/cheap you want it to be.

Because if the bolt and everything is done up tight, alot of the strain should be taken by the fricton, not the actual keyway.

or how about the crank has broken, try pulling on the pulley, see how much movement there is

Check the actual pulley first.

Have had a gfew vehicles in at work wher the actual V belt part fo the pulley is rubber mounted to the centre part that bolts to the crank,
and som when the rubber gives out the centre of the pulley will spin, but not the outside.

Easy to see if you just look with a torch while the engine is idleing.
