There are 2 types of E series gearboxes.
one type has gear cogs which are approx 30% wider than the other.
We'll call this the heavy duty type gearbox. The heavy duty type gear box is easily identified externally as it has a longer middle casing. Pretty much anything on the input shaft or output shaft of these gearboxes cannot be swapped between the two. I will post pics in the next couple of days of these difference.

From what i have seen, the boxes are like this.
Heavy Duty type
E50 - 4wd
E150 - 4wd
E151 - 4wd
E152 - 4wd
E153
E154 - 4wd
these gearboxes are the ones found behind 3SGTE's.

Standard type E series box
E55 - 4wd
E56 - 4wd
E57 - 4wd
E250 - 4wd
these are the boxes found behind 4AFE, 3SGE, 3SFE

at this stage i'm not sure which catergory the @#VZFE gearboxes are I'll have a look at work and confirm.
E51 - 4AGZE - heavy duty type
E52 - yet to be classified
E53 - yet to be classified
E58 - AE101 AGZE - standard type

yeah E55 is a 4wd box found behind 4AFE's in AE95 and AE104 sprinters, also found behind 3SFE in ST195 Caldina.

The E153 draws my attention. Am I to assume that this 'box is 2wd. Which would possible make it a FWD box. Therefore could possibly be used to replace my current PoS weak synchro box on my 3S-F in my ST171 Corona?

there is no point putting and E series box behind a 3SF engine. killing synchro's aren't a gearbox strength issue, I'd suggest working on your gear shifting technique before you try 'fixing' the issue by putting in a massively overkill gearbox.

Nah car had shot synchros when I purchased it. I bought a used box seeing as I can not buy these boxes brand spanking new and reconditioning it would have cost about the price of the car. The used box has the same thing 'cept for it's in 2nd and 3rd instead of just the downshift two 4th. Decided I might be better with a different box. Are any of these boxes 6 speed?

Car had done 275,000KM at the switch over now sitting at 299,600KM so would be nice to get a nice 'box for her. Sorta celebratory :) Also if any has an approx price I should be looking at for a good one that would also be appreciated.

let me guess, you brought the gearbox privately not from a dismantler? in any vehicle which is getting on in its age, if the synchros are gone its better to get new synchros because pretty much every other gearbox you'll find is the same age and therefore suffering from the same thing as yours. If you're really lucky you might find a one owner low kms gearbox but it doesn't happen very often.

Nah, dismantler. Bought the box, was gonna chuck it in but sorta got side tracked finally got the box in and didn't have the time to take it back out and complain needed car so been using it ever since. Sorta didn't have hte money at the time to spend on new synchro's etc considering I had been quoted $1000+

if you brought it from a dismantler, and the synchro's were poked you could have taken it back

Understood, but due to time I couldn't. Still not answering any of my questions about whether the E-153 is likely to fit, 6 speed, price etc.

As far as I know there are no 6-speed e-series gearboxes. Anyway the whole 6-speed thing is overrated.

6 speed no, to fit a E-153 to a ST171 u have to change the shifter to the back side of the box, run a turbo clutch, and run GT4 halfshafts, not worth the bother for ur power level

Hey, I currently have the standard C Series gearbox in my car but replacing it with a E58? Are the shafts and cvs specific to each gear box (i.e. a E52 wont fit an E58? or can these be compatible with one another?

from what I can tell there is two types of E series inner axles, LSD and non LSD. C series definitily wont fit.
