When they say don't work under a car on a jack...

they mean it!

Note the round dent adjacent to the drain bolt? That is from the wheel of a small hydraulic jack that tipped as the jack was being lowered. The car's rear wheels skidded on the concrete.

Anyone have a spare sump pan from a Gen 3 3S?

I'd just pulled the axle stands out and started to lower it when it went.

Unfortunately Jap imports didn't have the oil level sensor (according to EPC) so I'll get the panelbeating hammer out tomorrow!

if i had pictures of the x-rays of my ribs from when i dropped the front end of a civic on me (no engine or gearbox, just civic.................. was doing engine swap after sister's car threw a cambelt) i could top that. for stupidity at least. learnt my lesson from that one, always use axle stands now and sort of pedantic about making mates do the same thing.

I'm guilty of that one. I know I shouldn't but I do.
Having said that I don't like to and if I'm taking more than one wheel off or it's going to be up for a while I'll throw some blocks underneath it. But for quick jobs I risk it

Even if I take one wheel off to do the brake pads or change a tyre or something I chuck the wheel under the car I just took off...

i've had an s13 on me for two minutes.
was lucky enough to come away with a cut on my hand despite having the sill across my body and the gearbox on my hand :oops:

don't take any chances any more :?

I:
- chock any wheels opposite the point I'm lift (e.g. I'll chock the wheels at the back of the car if I'm lifting the front)
- Use axles stands if I have them available, if I'm not just changing the tyre
- absent axle stands, a large chunk of wood (e.g. splitting block)
- and put a tyre (with rim!) under the side being lifted if I'm changing the tyre
- and stay clear of the car while raising or lowering.

I don't want 1000kg+ of car giving me a "gentle nudge"

Its definatly a little more than a gentle nudge, but its not overly painful haha

you still working on the blue beast rich ? When will we see that next - as we STILL need to get the NZ new group A's together for a meet

The hole is for the oil level float (NZ new 3S only). The cut out in that part of the float is for the oil filter which comes off the sump. When you see it in the car it kinda makes sense.

One thing I learned out of this, grey gasket sealant does NOT stick to silver HPC coating. The aluminium sump was coated with HPC (waste of money). I undid the sump screw expecting to spend 20 minutes cutting the bastard off like when I rebuilt the engine. However just one tap made it drop off and covered me with the remnants of the oil. :x

I've taken a couple of days off work so decided to get a few things done. Only done about 2000kms in it this year, all open road.

I'm fixing the sump as noted. I thought that was where my oil leak was coming from, but closer inspection has shown a crap load of oil below the distributor. Bit hard to trace as it is so gunked. Also the turbo drain pipe has a lot of oil on it, probably from the temperature fitting I installed.

Also planning to remove the camshaft cover and drill it for Caldina ignitors. Will also retorque head studs.

Nothing major, it's done 60,000kms since the rebuild so time for a bit of maintenance!

I had a ride in franks Fresh rebuilt one - Very VERY nice and drivable .. t revs out like a honda :) Its basically the smae specs as what will end up in mine though ill try and aim for more response VS top end power :)

Yeah I always use axle stands if I'm doing something other than just changing a wheel obviously. Had a mate that had his beamer fall off a jack while he was under it. Amazingly a screwdriver somehow stabbed itself into the floor pan giving him the chance to escape for a cople of secs 8O He was lucky, most arn't.

Haven't learnt my lession yet at all... sort of changed motors in my corolla with only two sisser jacks.. :oops: I look back now and thought that i did notice that there was always a sway on when i was underneath it but being a dumb teen, didn't care hahaha (man i dont thing im all there yet)
