Turbo cleanup

Postby TRD_ZERO » Mon Oct 08, 2007 5:25 pm

I just purchased a tdo5h evo5 for a reasonable price (second hand) NOw the guy i got it off says it had really low kms but there is a little oil here and there. Im dont want to put it onto my engine and it starts smoking and i cant guess whether its the engine or turbo. So what are my options regarding cleaning it up getting it checked out? Is anyone on this forum able to help me out?

TD05's are cheap as chips to get new seals for them. Last time I got my TD06SH done it's only $250ish

Just do it, you want new seals anyway.

I went to alltech today and they will take it apart but wont put it back together unless they replace something. They said the seals for about 300-400 depending, 250 sounds good akane where did you get that done?

That sounds too cheap for us...

We wont pull the turbo apart & clean it up & put the old bearings, orings & pistion rings in there. it is not a wise thing to do.

you have to remmber that the turbo is spinning way way faster than the engine... (upwards of 150,000 + Rpm) and the clearances are very tight... 3odd thou between the bearings & bearing housing, same with the turbine shaft.

if we put the old worn bearings back into your freshly rebuild turbo, you spent 6 odd hours re installing it back into your car, and it poo's itself on the first test run, you will come running back saying its our fault.

just quickly priced it up, rebuild with a Genuine MHI Major kit, balance & labour is just under $600 +gst... ( if it needed that)
or just bearings, piston rings, orings, Balance & labour is $ 430+gst...

so if it just needed the indviual parts $500 is cheap for peice of mind...

Alltech Turbo, at wairau.

It was $250-$290, it's 2 something, and it was yearrrrrrrrs ago when I was pimpin' it large [sic] with the Greddy TD06.

I Vaguely remember the docket said something like new oversized bearings and seals (TD05), regrind shaft and labour.

It's less than $300 I'm sure, can't remember the very exact figure.

So if i hand it over to you to get checked out, do you reccomend what needs to be replaced and then go from there? I got told the thrust bearing for a tdo5h (evo 4 and up style) is about $500 alone

Yes. we will pull it apart, inspect all parts & make sure they are in a good condition, (compressor wheel, Turbine shaft & wheel & Bearing housing are look at, to make sure there are no problems.)

price it up with what ever it needs, and ring you. (unless you give the go ahead if it just need minor parts.)

the Evo 4 + turbos rotate the oppisite way from "normal" TD05's
so the trust bearing is different. if it needs a thrust bearing kits are $440 +gst alone...

MHI turbos are extremly good... but if stuff gets damaged it can start to cost some money.

In the end if it needed to be rebuilt, it may have been cheaper to get a brand new td05 off trademe. They are going for around $700.

NO not really im yet you get it rebuilt itf it needs one at all and the ones on trademe are evo1-3 style i think and i got a evo5 style. Which i wanted facing the other way. I didnt pay much for it in the first place. So no regrets so far.
