ae92 transplant possibilities - anything tricky?

Postby gmacrae » Thu Oct 25, 2007 12:07 pm

Howdy peeps. My ae92 fxgt is gonna get a transplant soon, want to replace engine/loom/ecu and gearbox. Just wondering which is the best way to go and what things are likely to be tricky - if anything.

*1st option is a low km 7a block and smallport redtop head/loom/ecu with gtz gearbox (prob prefer non-lsd).

*2nd option is a complete blacktop transplant, with 5spd box.

I'd prefer the first option because it will still look like an ae92 under the hood, and because the gtz box is geared a bit taller (sick of 3500rpm@100ks).

Will either swap be anything but "plug and play" ? Assuming im getting all the gear that comes with either engine (complete loom, accessory shit like alt, p/s etc).

Also, is there any issue running a powersteering rack/pinion with no power assistance? ...i'd like to keep the powersteer stuff and aircon off the new engine. Or will i have to find a compatible non-powersteer rack to fit this car?

Thanks in advance - i think i might have to do this sooner rather than later, the ol bigport's gettin a bit of a rattle goin

Re: powersteering, it seems pretty common in Honda circles to disable a p/s rack, just loop the in and outputs for p/s fluid and leave a small amount in there. Apparently it can however be a WOF issue if noticed so finding a suitable manual rack would be preferable... I'm sure there's zillions of EE90 manual racks out there that one would expect to work.

hey there, I did a blacktop swap into my ae92 and everything is relatively straight forward mechanically, but wiring is a little bit different and a little bit of loom rewiring will need to happen to splice the blacktop loom into your cars standard one, took the guy doing mine I'd say approximately between 10-15 hours to do this??

you'll also need a new radiator as the top hose on your radiator is on the far left hand side and an ae111 radiators is in the middle, you can also you ae82, ae101 radiators which have the top hose in the middle, but you will need to reweld the radiator mounts a little lower or just go rangi and do what I did grab an angle grinder grind the hell out of them, and smack the mounts down a little bit

7a option could be interesting though, would make for a nice torquey motor :)

Shit.

Cakky, thanks for the info. If there's that much wiring involved i think ill give the blacktop idea a miss, dammit. I was starting to think that was the best way to go but i really dont want to be pissing round with this swap for weeks, i just need it done and running FAST (once i start the swap). The car is just the work hack and it cant be out of action.

So if i were to do the smallport/7a swap, is there any difference between the smallport and bigport looms? or is it pretty plug and play?

If the smallport swap is straightforward that might be the way to go?

Thanks guys, any more info is appreciated

nah the 4agze engine loom computer gbox shafts hubs afm etc, good start for turbo setup, or even just have it supercharged, in FS section, has 200k on it, runs good, wanting 2225ono

i'd say there's difference between smallport and bigport loom because bigport is tvis, smallport isn't...

the injector plugs are different in big port and small port. it will run lean on sts comp too. on my 7age i was gonna just put a variable resistor in the water temp wire so it thinks its old att the time. make sure you put the small port istons in the 7afe otherwise it will have like 7.5:1 static compression ratio

Yep if i use a 7a block it will definitely have the 4age pistons, was worried about the valve cutouts actually, didnt think there would be much difference in comp ratio.

So anyone here able to tell me how easy the bigport -> smallport swap is? Anything electrical i should know? Not looking for a mission here, plug and play is all i have time for :? Im counting on having a complete smallport loom/ecu.

if you have a complete smallport engine and loom it shouldnt be too difficult

matching the engine to the body loom would be the only road bump i should imagine.

7AGE is pretty time heavy for a work hack, why not just replace with another bigport?

silvertop conversion isnt that bad.
You will have to get the front pipe modified to suit your exhaust though and the wiring will take a few hours. Not too bad though.
Plenty of information about the swap on the net too.

and by the time you sell your redtop bits you will probably end up making money off the conversion.

power sterring is an easy swap

running no powersteer is just silly

so nobody here's actually done this swap?

its the swap that cant take long, building the engine outside the car can take a couple weeks if it has to, but the swap needs to happen on a weekend

Cheers. The exhaust is no biggie, its wiring that worries me. What kinda wiring is involved? whereabouts in the loom? in the dash? Wires to what? instruments/guages?

I'd prefer to do it smallport but it sounds like i might go bigport 7age if the wiring to smallport is going to be a pain in the ass. I'll just give it a little bit more fuel pressure to compensate for the extra cc's.

Yea, cut the belt today, drives fine. I drove a kingswood with fat tyres and a 12" momo wheel for 7 years, the corolla's got nothing on that.

Running a stuffed thermostat and a ceased rear calliper for 3 months is silly lol, any word on those bits?

the wiring is fairly straight forward, ill try and dig up the information for you if you decide to go that way.
Alternator is fine, dash is fine (most wires are the same colour)

Then its mostly a case of splicing the 20v loom into the existing ae92 fuse box.

There are only about 5 wires you need to do to get the thing running.

Cheers deaf_rattle, but i think i have a plan...

Smallport 7age with all the stock smallport gear, and plug it into the cars bigport loom, so ill hopefully just have to change the injector plugs, or maybe just run bigport injectors if they're same size/resistance. I'll plug in a smallport ecu of course.

Can anyone see any problems with this? Other than injectors, are there any other plugs that differ between the smallport/bigport loom? (im thinking maybe dizzy, tps, temp sensors)...?

Thanks again - Gene
