The first time I drove my work car (1998 Cefiro wagon) it took me longer to find out how to open the filler cap, has anyone had this problem in one?

Have a guess where the lever is?

Yep it is. My dads focus is like that. I reckon its awesome, nice and secure as well. If they get in the car, cant open bonnet.

Took us 10 mins to attempt to find it.

I know that in a lot of "new" vehicles it is not the handle on one side or the other but a triangle like an arrow pointing to the side that the fuel cap is on

but if it is not there, as was mentioned before, pop the lid and look in the side mirrors as you drive up who couldn't work that one out

I drive a lot of different vehicles at work and never have a problem remembering where the filler is, its just the first time you have to check.

Yeah it's a pain in the ass. My Sud had the boot release on the drivers, and the bonnet on the passengers.... one of my parts cars which was a year earlier had both on the passengers side. Double pain in the ass.

If you look at your gas guage, you will see a small icon of a gas pump. The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the pump. If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo above). It is that simple!

I would have thought it would be the other way around, if the handle is on the left then your filler should be on the right (closest to the filler). And if the handle is on the right then your filler should be on the left (closest to the filler).

The problem that I can see with this is that most new toyotas, fords, hondas etc (basically a large majority of cars) have their fillers on the passenger side. Which makes my explanation above correct. And as the image on your dash should always have the pump handle on the same side (the right), then it makes my theory correct. If it is a subaru, or old toyota etc then it will be on the drivers side and thus the explanation that Warren gave is valid.

Basically it depends on how you look at it, but is definatly not going to stop me doing an Ace Ventura or a pop the cap and mirror check. Nowhere near reliable enough. 50/50

Some would say that is the correct way. Because when you pull up to the pump at a gas station you would drive up passenger side towards the pump. And if you were looking at the pump in the gas station then it is on the right side (drivers side). So technically it is correct lol

Its the side the pump hose is on im pretty sure?

yep that's it, my old boss had a focus while his xr6T was being serviced, He wanted to put more windscreen water in but we couldn't figure out how to open the bonnet. We called the dealer and they told us lol

My work car has a button under the drivers door arm rest for the petrol cap and the trunk - really odd

Doesnt hold true for my caldina gtt as well. The hose is on the drivers side on the pic on the dash, whereas the fuel cap is on the passenger side.

On the subject of fuel doors and their sides, another interesting (not really but meh) fact is that generally (exceptions being duel exhausts and some randoms) the fuel door always on the side opposite the exhaust.

So if you cant remember what side it is, think of the exhaust you spent sevral hundred bucks on and what side it's on ......
