NZ GTi Questions

Postby BROCKZILA » Fri Nov 30, 2007 6:02 pm

Got a NZ new Corolla Gti 1990 manual just need a few answers sorry if this is already posted elsewhere but I have trouble navigating forums

1. How fast should it go? Around Puke track I couldn't get more than 180kmh out of it, my EP71 si Starlet did 170kmh I was hoping for 190 am I being optimistic?

2. How many kms do you guys get out of a full tank of gas?

3. How do I make it go faster? It has extractors and exhaust and pod filter (which I want to get rid off and replace with an airbox.

4. It has red lettering on top and t-vis what does this mean? Is it a good model or should I flag it and buy a 20v AE101?

thanks in advance

depends what you want it for. it will be limited to 180km/hr, hence your inability to hit 190.

the engine you have is commonly referred to as a bigport, and its generally agreed that the later model "smallport" 4AGE was the best of the 16V breed.

you want it to go faster, go turbo! seriously.

tvis = "toyota variable intake system".

you'll see the intake manifold has 8 inlet runners, basically tvis blocks off four of those runners at low revs to maintain air velocity, as with the excessively large inlet ports on the bigport they are extremely sluggish otherwise. once the revs hit 4200 or so the butterflys open and all inlet runners feed their respective cylinders. this setup was done away with in the smallport, and though the smallport is a better engine the bigport has a nice sound once the tvis butterflys open and gives you a kick in the back too (im sure you've noticed this) which makes it feel faster than it is :D

edit - engine swaps are pretty easy throughout the 4AGE range, so you dont need to replace the entire car if you decide you dont like the engine - just do an engine conversion ;)

When i had my Corolla, it was the same year, but it had the smallport . I thought all Corolla FX/GTi had the smallport after 1989.
AND, to answer your question, i got approx 400-450km a tank.
AND 350km a tank on a "good day".

Thanks heaps guys for your replies I didn't expect them so quickly.

It didn't feel like a limiter e.g fuel cut etc

1) Is that an indicated 180km/h on the back of puke?

My standard 20v shows approx 200, and i've been clocked with a laser at
173 just past the kink, so I think about 180 ~ 185 is my true top speed.

2) I get usually get 550km to a tank.

3) Do a search, it's covered everywhere, and I can't be bothered going into
detail here

4) IMO keep the 16v, with a bit of money in them they go quite well.
And the cheapest car is the one you already own.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

Yeah indicated 180 from the kink all the way to the "100" marker.

True it is cheaper to do up something i already have have to talk the mrs into letting me take her BZ wagon around :)

So you don't pick up any speed from the kink onward?
Can't say I've driven a Bigport around puke so that might be normal, but it doesn't seem right.

Yer if its a genuine nz new corolla gti then it should have 240km speedo, and i got to 230km in mine before i dropped my sacks :D So no reason why you can't get there. As for going faster, depends if you want to stay NA, or go forged/motor transplant anf go turbo/supercharged.
