Mounting a fire extinguisher into a SW20

Postby touge rolla » Wed Dec 26, 2007 6:24 pm

My mum got me a fire extinguisher for Christmas as per my request.
Now I am left with where and how to mount it.
This is my first choice, though i'm not sure it will be easy due to there only being solid metal on the bottom half of it
Image
here would be easy to reach and install but my leg hits it whilst on the foot rest (not too big a problem though)
Image
and here it may restrict seat forward movement, but would be out of my way the rest of the time
Image
any other location suggestions/feedback?
also are there any requirements as to how it is mounted? ie what sort of bolts/screw are used? and what it can/cannot be secured to? where have other SW20 owners with a fire extinguisher mounted theirs?

i would go for the last option.
have a good look and see if it will fit. it probably will.
failing that, how about some where behind the seat?

there are rules for mounting if you want to do track days or motorsport stuff

I havent mounted one in my SW20, but ill be putting mine in front of the seat, with the bracket attaching to the mounting holes of the seats. Someone on here came up with the idea.

Yes I really want to take it onto the track, think in just front of the seat is the winner. But don't know the MSNZ rules for how it must be fixed. I imagine bolted/screwed but Is there anything more specific? rules on MSNZ website are .pdf so can't read it :(

the way we set a few up for the MM07 trackday was attaching the extinguisher to a piece of steel, which was then bent/welded, then drilled so that it bolted to the seat mounts.
i would do a MS Paint, but i am lazy tonight

Also: big panel washers under floor, and either nylock, or double bolt.

What about removing the center console piece on the firewall and mounting it there? Easily accessable to driver and co-driver.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

How often do you have midgets driving your car to restrict seat movement?
I have mine mounted in front of my seat like option three (but my seats don't move).
Either of the other two places you would be kicking it all the time, brusing knee's and ankles, getting your overalls caught on it. So I don't know if it would pass scrutneering.

I know that's where i was going to put it, but decided that what little storage space there is in a mr2 is valuable.

So a couple of 6mm bolts with decent washers on the other side, and nylock/fujilok nuts will be sweet?

Extinguishers shall be installed in accordance with the following:
(a) A retaining system incorporating quick release metal fastenings/straps, or material of equivalent strength (ie Kevlar), secured to the structure of the vehicle by a minimum of two 6mm bolts with panel washers and locknuts.
(b) Hand held extinguishers shall be positioned within easy reach of the occupant/s while normally seated.
