sway bar noise

Postby barryogen » Wed Feb 06, 2008 2:50 pm

I have a TRD sway bar fitted to my little RunX, and it makes a clunking noise on lateral movement... is this normal?

I know it is the sway bar as removing it the noise disappears.

It may not matter too much to me as I'm selling it, but the potential new owner will want to know what was causing it, hence my post.

only way for it to be the sway bar is if its loose

or maybe its not the bar

maybe the extra stiffness in the bar is causing movement in the rear beam bushs

heh, the 45 odd mins it took me to struggle to get it undone says that it certainly isn't/wasn't loose... I might just drop it off at a suspension place as I suspect that it will be tricky to diagnose online

I would be looking at the bushes... even if they do look alright they can be noisey.

after that check your swaybar links for any play

the rear beam flexes, the sway bar bolts into the beam to stiffen it
the bar is solid mounted to the beam

I must say driving without the sway bar makes it interesting...

the only thing majorly different is if i change direction twice in quick succession the back end swings like it's a wagon, but never seems to let go, well, I'm not driving it hard either.

Front bar I take it?

When we got our BZT wagon is had a noise very similar,

after an extensive search it turned out that the two bolts where it bolted to the firewall in the centre of the strut bar, were tight, but not tight enough and under cornering it would move the 2mm or so in the hole through the bar and make a loud clunk on each direction change.

Maybe you have a similar issue?

had a decent look at it last night.
the bushes at the very front of the rear arm flex/crush as they should, but when the bar is added, it flexes more, and hence the noise.

Will find out from rev head about cost of nolathane replacements... but I tend to think that it would make it rather jarring.
