Quick check re: smallport 4age injectors/ecu

Postby ~SlideWays~ » Thu Feb 14, 2008 8:57 am

My brother just bought an ae82 FXGT in excellent condition, it has a Smallport conversion and looks to have swapped the loom correctly.

Just to confirm.

- Does the redtop ecu have the three grey plugs?
- Are redtop/smallport injectors green?
- How to tell if correct distributor is used?

Cheers

No pics as of yet, got back at 1am this morning from picking it up....5hrs sleep and posting on TS at work FTW!

*off to get a coffee* lol

If you are worried about it being the cam covers. First thing to look out for is the intake manifold, a real "redtop" is a smallport so NO tvis.

yes and yes. not sure about the major differences of the dizzy between bluetop and redtop though, my redtop uses the small metal plugs into the dizzy (about 3mm), thats possibly the only diff.

Cheers for confirming the first 2. The distributor is definitely different on the smallport but I'm not sure if there is any visual difference externally.

Doesn't the Bluetop dizzy work on a points style setup while the redtop one has the multi tooth wheel etc?

Real good way to tell is the oil drain on the back of the head. Bigport doesnt have this where smallport does.

And the lack of TVIS is a good pointer as even trying to remove it to fool someone you still need to fit an adapter plate (so there will be this large alumnium shiny plate where tvis should live.)

Everything else is just nit picking, the only power maker is the head (and ecu).

Its hard to tell by the colours of stuff because stuff changes through the generations. IE bigport loom out of a ae86 is completely different to one out of a AW11 mr2 in terms of colour but all the pins and everything it does is the same.

Easiest thing to spot is 4 runners in the inlet manifold instead of the 8 in a TVIS model... but he didn't ask that

yes - 3 grey plugs on ECU, bluetop is yellow
yes - injectors are brightish (not dark) green, bluetop injectors are grey
the dizzys look different, but the plug on the smallport dizzy is grey, where on a bluetop it is yellow

Can I have a look at it sometime? I need to figure how to do the same on my car.

small port engine/ecu setup just wont work with a big port distributor so if it runs ok then its definately a smallport distributor.
