Cutting springs legality?

Postby GDII » Sat Feb 23, 2008 8:04 pm

I have an EE90 with Caldina ST215 GTT standard front springs. It makes the front of the car sit up too much.

What is the legality of cutting them half a coil shorter to match the original springs and lower the car down some what?
It won't be lower than stock as I am not aiming to lower the car.

I am going to replace the front shocks soon so would like to do that at the same time.

Having the GTT springs has made handling better and reduced some of the body roll. But has given me positive camber.

Would it be best to cut the GTT springs or put the EE90 springs back?

You can not cut springs. Full stop.

I figured that. So should I leave them the way they are or go back to EE90 springs?

The handling is bad enough as it is, feels very unsafe. But all four shocks are dead. Guess when I replace them it would help stabilize the car.

My old S13 had cut springs and is LVVTA certified. AFAIK it's ok as long as it's captive when fully extended.

Edit: just searched LTSA website, cut springs are a no no, wonder how my previous owners got away with that.

I am replacing all four shocks. $280 for the lot. I think replacing springs is going over the top for just a daily driver. But on windy days its a handful at 100kph on the motorway. Just won't stay straight.

If I can find an ok replacement engine the car will be fine. It leaks water and burns and leaks oil. It goes through 3litres of oil in 3-4 weeks and the water is 500ml in 3 days. I know where the water comes from but cannot find a replacement part for it. Need a whole new pump housing.

IT IS ILLEGAL.

You may be able to certify it to make it legal, but thats not what hes asking.

You can do alot of illegal things that you can make legal with certing, but it seems like hes trying to save money :) so im sure a cert would be more than decent springs.

They will definitely be captive. Even if I cut just that half coil it will still be higher than stock. To get the springs on involved alot of compressing. And I'm not trying to lower the car or do anything stupid.

The only people to see the car is a local garage and they don't seem to notice that the car doesn't sit right.

yea, totally illegal to cut any springs...but half a coil i doubt they would notice and as long as they arent loose when they jack it up to check it for WOF's then no one will know.

But one thing that might come back to bite you would be if you ever have a bad crash and then the insurace company checks...and if they see it cut, then no pay out for you and they guy u hit

I guess I can go back to EE90 springs and keep everyone happy lol.

Shocks would be the main problem with the handling. But that extra ride height was nice. Never bottomed the car on driveways or large speed bumps.

Well if you put it that way with insurance then I should go back

I just wanted safer handling and had free springs from AJz Caldina.

Shocks will help with safety. Not looking for performance upgrades. Its got a dieing 2E and it FWD

Thanks for your input. Will make the car look better too.[/quote]

insurance may cause problems. you can always plead ignorance and say your car had a wof, how were you to know they were cut if the wof inspector didnt pick up on it?

when someone rear ended me at the lights in my EE90 (dizzy bitch) the insurance inspectors both gave the car a cursory 10 min inspection and wrote it off. if its not going to be insanely low, i dont think you'll have a problem. the car was totally standard, but what im saying is they didnt go into much detail with it. that being said if its a really nasty one and the police get involved it might be a different story.

at the end of the day, its illegal but yes you can get away with it.

Problem will be if you hit a 500k+ bmw. The insurance company will find anything they can to get out of it.

Unless you go below 100mm ride height,or modify any components and is not height adjustable unless OE. Altho none of that would apply for you.

to chassis, ride height can be anything you want, exhaust, body kit etc don't count in the 100mm allowance
