Overheating issues

Postby 20v_rollaboy » Tue Mar 25, 2008 10:14 pm

Car is a 1995 Corolla Wagon, 5efe engine, auto.

The car overheats

Ive replaced the water-pump, taken all hoses off and checked for blockages, checked radiator for blockages, checked everywhere for leaks, checked thermostat, checked radiator fan. Everything works.

After about 30kms of motorway driving, the temp gauge will go up. If I drive with the heater on the temp stays good/in the middle.

I have also done an oil change and have not noticed any water in the oil.

Help please :!:

How high does it go?

In my last car i set the thermostat so it wouldn't open until 100*C.
With the pressure the water is under and antifreeze its still a safe temperature for the water to be at.

most likely blocked radiator.
Warm up the car until the fan kicks in, then touch the bottom of the radiator and top and see if the bottom is cold, if it is cold and top is very hot that is a sign of blocked radiator.

Ive let it get to 3/4 before pulling over and letting it cool down, but recently I have become used to driving with the heater on and the windows open.

Will check the radiator thing tomorrow, thanks Sergei.

Also how did you checked thermostat? did you put it in the boiling water to see if it will open?

loosen off the bolts on each hinge an install washers between the rear bolt and bonnet.

works real good, seemingly. and seeing as your car is overheating real bad, it would be proof that it dosn't work!!

Done a compression test??
(guess it would be fine if there is no water in the oil) but worth a shot??

No, I havnt done a compression test, but if I cant find any other problems i will do one.

fangsport, do you mean to check if there is pressure on the hose going to the bottle?

I should also mention Ive replaced the radiator cap

LOL, yes we should all raise our bonnets so our engines will run cooler

open the recovery bottle lid and see if there is compression bubbles .

You say you have replaced the cap??
Please dont flame me for this as im not sure if this is true or not, but you did get the correct cap for it? I was told years ago that putting the wrong cap on can screw with pressure and stuff...but again, dont know if that could be true or not

I'd guess this too. I usually pull the radiator out and fire a hose in the top inlet. If the water doesn't rush out of the bottom in an unhindered manner, then it is probably blocked.

Ok, I have just taken the radiator out, flushed it, and put it all back together. There were not any blockages in it, but there was some rust in the bottom of the main pipe going to the radiator.

On my way back home now, will see what happens.

Ok, problem is still here. No blockages in the radiator.

Short of doing a compression test, I am out of ideas :(

I've had the same problem in my Lancer. I put a cooling system flush through, then pulled out the radiator and flushed it with a hose. Seemed to have good flow so refitted it but the problem was still there. Only way to fix it was get it stripped and cleaned at a radiator shop. Dropped the car off and $125 later, it was all sorted. It would be cheaper if you took your radiator out.
See ya

Lift your bonnet up a couple of inches?

It may work
