Rusty rust rust rust

I was having a fiddle with my MR2 today and a piece fell off along the bottom of the doorsill. It did literally fall off, just dropped from the car. I was quite gutted because it revealed a gaping wound filled with what looks like space invader.(That old filling for homes, not the spacies game)

All I can see in my mind is huge amounts of cost to fix, which would piss me off as I probably can't afford it without dipping into my savings.

For the record, when I purchased the car I inspected this area and it was smooth as and did not look at all like there would be rust under there.




What would your suggestions be Toyspeed? To just bog it up? Or get it professionally fixed?

As an interim measure I have blasted it with heaps of fish oil to stem any further destruction.

Also, I discovered this about an hour ago and have been drinking beer ever since and whoring the internet - it has affected me greatly.

Edit: That other bit of flaking to the left of the main patch was where I picked away with a screwdriver to try and gauge the coverage of rust.

looks like a pro job to me, f**k thats a hole aye!!!

i'd grind the whole area to see how far it stretches, then look at getting it priced up with it all exposed.

That's awesome! One time we used space invader and newspaper to repair a sill on a Datsun Sunny. I bet it looks like that now.

Replace with steel. Unfortunately that's a major, space invader absorbs moisture so I'd be cutting a decent chunk out of that to see if it's affected below the outer skin at all

grind all the bad metal out get rid of that space invader and weld new stuff in,

then sand the whole sill down and POR 15 it

that space invader shit will be a pain in the arse to get out

Basicly, what you brought is an AW11. Cut it out, see how bad it is, if its too bad, look at reshelling the car. Take carpets out etc too, check the whole thing for rust, dont want to get that fixed and find other parts have cancer too.

The rest of the car is fine aye, over the last few months I have had it off the road and took time during that to remove the whole interior and check everything. Thats kinda why I'm so disappointed at this.

Method: I was considering that to tell the truth, out of sight, out of mind.

I would also be looking how it rusted in the first place, it will be a most likely that it has been caused by a water leak which will be a 99% chance that has also been caused by rust. Try and find how the water is getting in.

I would say it rusted originally because it's an AW11 and thats a factory option.

Ok, I just looked in the Yellow pages and found a few rust removal places, there was one 'New Brighton Rust removal and Budget Tyres.' I didn't like the sound of that tbh.

I rang a guy at a place called 'ACR corrosion repairs' I think its called. I gave him a detailed description and he has seen this before apparently so gave me a rough estimate on the phone which is so much better sounding then what I envisioned. Top guy.

Oh yeah, I'm going in to show him as well but he gave me an estimate on what it would cost at the worst of the worst which I was happy with. I'm not silly enough to rely solely on that though

Cant remember what it was, but rang up for a quote, and thought sweet, got olds to drop it in while I was at work.. Went in to pay bill after. Almost twice what I was quoted!!

It wont be that hard to fix, just a matter of grinding it all back to see how bad it is then plating it. I had a MK2 Escort with much much worse sills than that.

Thats still mint , just bog it up and wait for 6 months. Then fix it propperly. That gets rid of the need for an angle grinder cause the water cuts it out for you ... well thats what I did anyway, just makes it worse. Not that hard to do propperly.

take off the trim on the rear of the rear pillar
i think you will find a hole there.
AW11s rust under that trim, the resulting hole leaks water inside the frame, and rusts out where you just found your grand canyon.

its an AW11 it IS rusting in other places. thats what they do.
