Gull force 10

Postby method » Fri May 23, 2008 7:02 pm

Dont think this has been discussed too well, just its bad for older cars due to being corrosive etc.

Thinking of chucking a tank into my turbo 4age ke30.

I have heard it has a higher octane rating than 98, hence being more resistant to knock.

Thats exactly what im after, think im on the verge of getting knock but dont want to have to pull timing as that effects the low rpm performance.

Is it true that it has a higher octane rating than 98?

I know gull use a different system to other petrol stations.. thats all i know

is this like 10% ethol or whatever? (no gull down here)

Get less mileage don't you? much like running LPG which has a higher octane rating than petrol but you need to use more LPG to get the same power etc

The ecu wouldn't know to compensate though would it?

The writing on the pump says that it is up to 98 octane fuel - nothing about being "98 octane and higher"

it has a higher octane rating so it's less prone to knock, but it has less energy so you'll need to burn more to get the same results.

I've started running it in my daily driver V6 Galant, and I haven't noticed any rough running, around town economy seems to be the same (ie, sh*t), but open road is just as good maybe better than before - I got just over 700kms out of a 54L tank from Hamilton to Whangarei and back with a bit of driving around Auckland and Whangarei.

Aparently the first few tanks it may run rough, as the ethanol absorbs the moisture in the tank and generally picks up debris at the same time. After a few tanks it should come right though. Older fuel systems generally have seals which may not hold up to the ethanol blend, so that's another issue.

They do state to have 'anti-corrosive' additivies in it though.

Well, seems alright. Cant say if there is any difference between it and 98 from mobil. Car runs smooth and revs nicely.

Mobils 98 claim minimum RON of 97.5, gull claim 98 RON minimum.

Yea, I doubt you'd notice any difference. Theres no extra power in a fuel that has a higher octane rating, just an ability to resist autoignition, meaning you can advance the timing some more, which results in more power (to a degree).

Its cheaper than Mobil 98 though eh?

yeah but because ethanol fuel doesn't contain the same amount of energy you actually use a bit more of it to produce the same power as normal fuel.

Not so good on a RMZ450, clogged some valve in the carb which made it ran like a dog, with carb pulled apart, there was a buildup which stopped a valve working in the carb. So maybe not so good for high performance mx bikes

You have to change your fuel filter after using it for a bit to, apparently the fuel picks up any water etc in your tank.

Usually get about 400kms out of a tank in the SW (thin-ass) and by the looks of things, I'm set to get 500kms out of a tank using Force 10.
No change in driving style (IE. giving it the beans most places (but not exceeding speed limits)).

What toyota say about it...
http://content.toyota.co.nz/toyota/_cam ... oyota.html

I put 1/4 of a tank in my Altezza. Ran fine, not sure I should have after reading this though.

8. Does the use of corrosion inhibitor in Gull Petroleum's E10 fuel mean I can use it in my Used Import Toyota?
While we understand that Gull Petroleum's E10 fuel does contain corrosion inhibitor; its suitability has not been tested on our vehicles. Therefore our recommendation remains that E10 fuel is not suitable for use in used imported vehicles – refer to the above chart.

Does anyone remember that top gear episode where they made diesel then they raced a diesel BMW round a 24 hour race?
Their fuel pump leaked because their home brand fuel had too much ethanol in it and it was eating the rubber seals of the pump.

I'm worried Force 10 will do the same, causing an injector to leak spraying fuel everywhere.....

That's a very odd bit of propaganda.

Last time it surfaced I contacted them and asked for the part numbers of the NZ new Corolla GT fuel system, and the part numbers for the RunX fuel system, and they confirmed that they were the same.

I asked them to confirm if the NZ edition got a different tune to the Jap sold ones, they said they don't get a different tune.

So no difference between the two cars fuel system wise, and yet they say no to using it in the import... but the NZ new one is fine.(also they said that their signature class ones are fine too).

It just smacks of a lie.

And just to top it off... point 14 and 15 contradict each other.

If it ever shows up down south, I'll probably use it.
