105db at idle is actually not that loud, we have a customer who recently got his RX2 back on the road. It was sitting across the road at pit stop idling away nicely, definately not what I'd call annoyingly loud and it was apparently still 105db 8O Now its been choked back to 95, you can barely hear the thing idling.

phreak, it'll be quieter than your soarer now.

105db @ 4,500rpm that is but same here can hardly hear it idling now.

if they get strict on this, im sure a lot of people are going to be pissed because 95db is $&#$% all when you see it tested.

i just dont know what to do, change mufflers every time it needs a wof?

if you get pulled over and told to have it tested you'd be buggered... although I guess unless they confiscated your car, and took it down for testing there and then, it'd give you time to change it back to "quiet mode".

FWIW, I think your wrong, make it legal, 95dB is loud enough.

95 at the exhaust is meant to be something like 85 at road side, which is enough to cause permanent hearing damage.

it used to be a show car, the whole thing screams look at me.

but you have no idea how boring the car is now, with a quiet exhaust. its almost lost its wow factor.

Do they still test V8's at a lower RPM?? Cos I'm $&#$% if they run the Soarer up to 4500 :(

If it has vvt even if it's an 8, they test to 4500RPM or there abouts, not sure on the specifics though, havent looked at 8s.

Where'd you get that from??

They only seem to care about VVT in engines with 5 or less cylinders, which they go to 4800.

8's are tested at 3000 according to http://www.lvvta.org.nz/stdExhaustNoiseEmissions.pdf

Yet somehow we tested Chelle's Mirage race car, and PC's Corolla race car SITTING ON THE REV CUT, and they were 95dba ....

Mine at full revs is 95.2

This says one of two things. Either your testing equipment is faulty, or you are deaf.
105dB is VERY loud.

Actually, it was tested by a certifier with the correct testing gear....I may be mistaken about 105db being at idle, but when I heard it idling, it was damn quiet.
Note: I'm not an old winging coot, so my opinion of quiet will probably differ to that of an old fart.

Would the difference between a test at 3000rpm and 4500rpm produce significantly louder results?

the initial brief(prior to it coming in) about a year or so ago at a guess, they must have clarified it s bit further later on.

depends on too many things for us to figure out.
My car(altezza), is fairly quiet up to ~5000RPM, at which point it gets very noisy very quickly, I'd imagine that over 5000RPM it'd be well over the 95dB limit, but I don't often drive at those sorts of revs, atleast not for long anyway.

they should all be choked back to that, Yucky noises :?

I havent checked my STI, but it is stock standard and Leons one came out at 85DB, now at night reversing up the drive it is quite noisy, I think it would piss people off it was any louder.

I really hope they take some Harley's and Rotaries off the road using this

There are always little tricks you can do to get your exhaust past the certification. And once your exhaust has that tag on it they cant do much..

I dont know why everyone is so worried.
