Fitting and certifying ABS Brakes

Postby Markus » Wed Jul 30, 2008 11:47 am

I'm thinking about fitting all the ABS brakes out of an AE111 Trueno into a AE101 Wagon, along with all the superstrut etc.

Does anyone know if this can be certified through the LVV process ok? And do I need to go and do anything else drastic like fit new seatbelts or anything?

why on earth would you want to fit super strut suspension into a car that doesn't have it std? they are a problem child system that loves wearing out the ball joints.

I'm using the superstrut cos It has all the ABS attached to it. Can I still use the abs hubs without having to use the superstrut?

you dont even need to use the ABS remove the ABS sensors from the hubs . stick a welsh plug/frost plug in the sensor hole if you worried about getting debris in there

Ha ha, Ok, so im being slightly misleading. I have actually installed it all. (I was just trying to sound hypothetical) It all works cept for the light on the dash. Cant get that working, and wonder if thats gonna cause me hassles with certifyers. And wondering what other problems there might be with certifying.

Am feeling a bit sheepish cos I should have checked this before I did it all! You know how you have a project you just want to get started on, and dont want to mess round with unnecessary stuff like legalities!

I actually like ABS for the safety feature. Not fussed on superstrut, so if I can keep abs, but change back to non ss that would be cool.

I know nothing about ABS, but if your car didnt have ABS to start with, chances are, it doesnt have an ABS light in the instrument panel.

I have pulled apart the engine bay loom of 111, and cut out and installed all the ABS wires, along with suspension, hubs, discs, wheel sensors, ABS computer, ABS hydraulic unit with all the pipes, and also the wire that goes to the dash and lights up the little ABS light when you turn the key on.

The ABS all works really well, cept for the light, which I am only running by running the signal wire to, and running the other side to ground. I havent installed it in dash yet.

thats ur problem u need power on otherside for light to work!
if u put it dash light make sure it look factory(been in car all its life, u may need to pull dash see if theres abs light if not get another dash with abs and fit that)
and no cert required as long as light goes out mechanic not gona give a shit.

Thanks for that, think that should solve the light problem :D I'm gonna have to go through the cert process cos have put a silvertop in as well as disc conversion and super strut. I had to weld brackets underneath for the ABS sensor wires, and im guessing it might get picked up.

Not the kinda stuff you should be trying to skip cert on

You know you could have got normal 101 suspension with ABS and it would have been a lot cheaper than having to replace the superstrut arms every so often

I am mega impressed about your installing all that gear... no small feat in my opinion!
Good on you!

I presume the abs works? pedal buzzing when you brake really hard?
Does the ABS light turn on when you turn the ignition on?

I wonder if the led needs a +ve power source rather than earth. Often toyota car computers switch to earth rather than supplying +ve voltage

If the abs works but the light doesn't - check the led actually works... give it power from a separate source (with suitable resistor to limit the current).

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

You must get certification for removal or fitting of ABS.

Yeah if i bought it all it wouldn't have been worth doing. I had this car for spares, so used it. I would prefer non ss, but if i change back to my non, could I still use the ss discs and ABS stuff?

Replying to KinLoud. Thanks! Yes all works great. Kinda surprised it did, with all those wires. Was a good project. Got the light sorted too now thanks to gepsk8. I was trying to run it to earth

Only thing i need now is an instrument cluster with an ABS light in it, as my old one didn't have one. Anyone able to help? Needs to be from AE100/101 Corolla. (not ceres, levin, carib etc), and manual.

if you get stuck, PM strx7 off these forums - hes always been great at finding a few oddball bits for me.

but you might be able to find something in the parts for sale section, theres always a few 101's etc being stacked.

(theres that 20v power again)

also, im quietly impressed by your oddball project.
