Ok just replaced the water pump and thought i had everything timed up.
car wont start now, at all wont even turn over.

I am pretty sure i had it timed up correctly, but checked it just now and the crank is on -5.

the cam pulleys i had lined up with the notches and the 2 punch type marks on the pulleys.

Would timing cause the car not to turn over? or should i look at something else?

So the starter wont even turn over? does it even click? can you turn the engine over by hand?

timing wont stop the car from cranking.
does it click? or try to crank?
check the starter motor wiring is secure. especially the small key signal wire

i get a click, but thats about it. 11.7volts at the rsm and i had my optima connected at one point as well.

may just need a charge or maybe a bad earth

The starter has a solenoid wire and a fat wire going straight to the battery, make you didnt leave the fat one off the battery terminal

11.7 with key on, fan on but not running. it drops abit when cranking.

Might charge it over night and check earths. but wouldve thought it would start with the optima.

havent done something like put the cam pulleys on backwards?

cam pulleys stayed on.
i should set the thing on fire! only need it for another 2-3 months

Dumb question, but did you also line up the crank when you lined up the cams?
Not that it would prevent it from turning over unless the valves were touching the pistons or something. You turned it over by hand and rechecked it aye?

yeah, lined up crank and pulleys
tried it twice and then tried to start
although now when cams are at tdc, the crank is at -5. so not sure what happened there.

Maybe the starter is a bit sticky?

Would it be worth taking it apart and having a clean on the inside?
You say its clicking but not turning? take it and have a lookie anywyas? try another one if thats possible?

i really cant be arsed with it though lol!
just want to work on the supra.

maybe i should just sell this as is and buy some other hunk of junk to get me to work until i get the company car.

Be careful timing up the 20v. On one of the pulleys - I'm sure its the exhaust - there are two marks and it's easy to get the exhaust wrong. You need to look down the oil filler hole to make sure the inlet is right - there's a dimple that you should be able to see when the crank is at TDC. It lines up with the flat plate that comes halfway across the filler hole. You'll see what I mean when you have a look.

as evil si said timing will not stop it from at least trying to start.

i havent looked at a 20v in forever, but do they have that earth lead with a plug in the middle running from the head to the body by the cambelt covers? and if they do, did you plug it back in / reattach it properly?

good point. have you got a multi meter? check the earth resistance between the engine and chassis / earth terminal on battery, shouldnt be more than 1-4ohms

tried giving the starter solenoid a tap with a hammer?

if it clicks its got power to it, my guess is high earth resistance or a fu*ked starter motor,

if the earth is good try roll starting it

Actually both the cam wheels have two marks,
one has two dimples and one has a dimple and a line.

They should line up at TDC with two dimples at the top,
and then the other dimple and the line should line up with each other in the centre of the head.
