Wheel Question

Postby TRD_ZERO » Sun Sep 07, 2008 12:01 pm

Im looking at getting some wheels at some stage but just doing a little research before hand. Im wanting to know about these wheels as you can see by the pic the top one where it is bolted to the hub is alot more recessed than the one on the bottom. Why is that? I like the ones at the top but the ones at the bottom look completly different with the center bit sittling out alot further. Has it got to do with offset?
Wheels size? As i remember it was a similar issue with those dtm gt30's when they were in 17s the face was rather flat but in 18's the center is recessed.
Id be wanting to get a set of the ones in the pic at the top for my ae111 or would something like offset or whatever else make me have to get the ones at the bottom?

Thanks all input appreciated.

Its to do with offset and width. Take a look at the wheels on my Lexus, the fronts are 17x8, with a +30ish offset? (assuming here) and the rears are 17x9 with a +15 offset. They are the same wheel, just look quite different.

Oh ok sot the picture in the top has a negative offset and the one in the bottom has a positive one then? Im guessing ae111 wont be able to fit a negative type one and id have to get positive ones right? They look like two completly different mags just because of the offset.

What is the maximun negative offset a ae111 can run so i could get that recessed look.

You wont be able to run negative offset wheels on an AE111, they will stick out a lot! Standard offset is around +35 - +40 (thats a measurement in millimetres - a +20 wheel's hub sits 15mm closer to the inside lip than a +35 wheels hub)

The recessed ones dont have to be negative offset, mine are +15.

Oh, and check out soopachargen's wagon, afaik he has the same wheels as me (the rear ones) on his 101? wagon.

Yep. I got mine from Nick @ Magwarehouse North Shore. His tyres are very stretched, i got 215s and 225s on mine.

Thats me!!! im e-famous!!

not all 205s will stretch onto a 9 inch rim easily, i got lucky and the ones i already had went on without even needing a gusher, it rides like ass and i've never even chanced taking them through a warrent but it gives the euro/vw look i was going for with silly stretch
When in doubt, down and out.

yeah the tyres need to be slightly thinner. As long as the tread itself is within the limits off the guard the rim can stick out past afaik

it also says that the tyre must be of a size suitable to the width of the wheel as stated in the tyre manufacturers recomendation or something along those lines

Probably says the wheel itself should be of recommended size by the manufacturer too, but who listens to every single part of the rule

Within 5% of OEM overall diameter too... or something like that.

Was only pointing out the tread point, as thats what a WOF inspector would first notice
