If anyone's interested my research has led me to the following:
The resister is used to vary the output of the fuel pump. The car should not run without the resister in place, it will start and run for about 20 secs then cut out. Funnily enouch exactly what mine was doing before the auto sparky got his hands onit and bypassed the resister, which wasn't installed, so I now have to install the resister and find where he's run the bypass to sort this out.
The bypass will mean that the pump is running flat out all the time hence increasing wear.
