Push the piston back further.
Are the brakes modified? different rotor or calipers?

A quick measure of the distance across the thickness of the pads and rotor will tell you if the caliper *can* go on.
Make sure the rotor is sitting on the hub flat when trying to put the caliper on, if you can't hold it flat, put a couple of wheel nuts on to hold it there.

As above

1)make sure they are the right pads
2)make sure pistons/piston are right back
3)make sure any bolts or sliders aren't fouling
4)make sure the rotor is seated on the hub right, as having it on a slight angle will spread the pads making it harder

As a last resort, ditch any shims on the backing (if you have any), I've found sometimes that some aftermarket pads don't have the clearance for the shims from factory.

thanks for the input guys but i think iv found th problem! the top one of the two sliding bolts is siezed and not moving at all. tried everything. would also explain why only the inside pad is worn i guess. so sounds like im gonna need a new caliper cradle thing. anyone got a ae101 superstrut front left calliper cradle for a gtz? ill put it in the part section. any ideas to loosen the sliding bolt on the one that on there now?

dont worry guys got it sorted. mate who is nearly finished his apprenticeship came over and was like "man this is like goin back to kindy!" obviously proving my lack of knowledge. Managed to get the whole pin out, clean it, grease it up and put it back in and now we are all go!

bugger i didnt see this earlier, I could have helped you, i've had the exact same issue before, and i'm just down in Timberlea. I even have half a caliper rebuild kit in my garage , enuf to do one side as i couldnt be bothered doing both..
the slides get full of crap and jammed up, you just need to strip them down and clean them out, usually replace the seal and boot while its apart and put some new grease in, like new.
