Station Wagon race cars?

Postby FST4RD » Tue Oct 07, 2008 7:40 pm

Watching old british touring car races and seeing the old Volvo station wagon race cars kicking some serious arse before they got banned... apparently for not being able to see around or something
Whats the legalities of using a station wagon for hill climbs, track racing etc in NZ?
Could anyone else but Volvo do this

Perfectly legal.

You can run any shape car you want, so long as the safety gear is up to spec.

Cause i'm thinking that once the starion goes and i'm in a better financial postion I want to buy a station wagon for convienience but still dead keen to do some track work, and perhaps some racing later on...
Was thinking a BZ Carib, Libero GT of something of the likes....
I would dearly love one of those Volvo's but they tend to be pricey and scarce in manual....

They were never banned, but a rule change for 1995 was worded in such a way that they couldn't run a rear spoiler. They would have been at a serious disadvantage, so Volvo opted to run the saloon version instead.

I like the BZ's my flatmate has one and it's cool, heaps of aftermarket parts etc for them, just dodgy 6 speed boxes :P
GT libero's heaps of bolt in parts and even drop and evo motor in for fun...
Maybe a caldina GT, didn't they come with the beams motor? although they're a bit bigger and heavier then the libero and carib....

I like the carib and libero shape the best out of the station wagons...

Oh is that what happened! I see.... pity about that really cause the Station Wagons were the best looking BTC car :D

An ST246 Caldina would make a nice looking race car.
Possibly a bit pricey though

haha if I had the money....
Carib and libero's are much cheaper, smaller and parts are readily available for them... especially since it would be a daily driver/track car.

also had a new model to promote

the reason they ran the wagons is they knew they wouldnt be at the front of the grid to start with
so to maximize publicity (coz thats the ONLY reason car makers race) they decided on the wagons.

used to be an 808 (or rx3) wagon racing in the SI based in chch i think

Nah, the S40 didn't debut until the following year ;)

When spoilers were allowed on the saloons the 850 saloon was a better choice, before the spoilers the 850 estate had more downforce.

Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

What? The way I read Fivebobs post, they raced the 850 estates until the spoiler rule, then the 850 saloon, and then the S40

Congratulations you pass comprehension 101, I fear Adamal will have to resit the exam, unless I fail at comprehending his post ;)

Back on topic. Those were the best years of the BTCC, before Audi ruined it. Rickard Rydell was just awsome at punting those estates around, still have most of the videos of that season and even watch them occasionally.
