Fuel tank question

Postby Vertigo » Sat Dec 27, 2008 8:11 am

hey, so ill be dropping a 4AGE 16v into my AE80 that currently has a 2A 8v carby. im sure it currently has a fuel tank with built in fuel pump, which will no doubt be designed for carb engines and thoroughly unsuitable for the 4AGE. should i:

a) get new fuel tank with external fuel pump
b) replace fuel pump with an EFI internal pump, using existing tank
c) not bother at all, and hope the current pump works??

cheers

carbys usually have a mechanical pump at the motor dont they, id say you need to get an efi tank or rangi up and external high pressure pump, and remember efi needs a return too which the carb tank may not have, all the fun things to think about

how about just get and efi tank with internal pump from an AE82 FX or similar?

I take it your car will be similar shape being EE8#?

You will still need to run a return line no matter what you do.

I'm doing the same with my EE80, (except I have to change engine mounts). I have an FXGT parts car that I am using to get all the efi gear out of, so I would suggest the same.

The carby motors ahve a sender in the fuel tank and a mechanical pump at the engine. Its all much lower pressure than an efi setup.

You will also need to replace your rubber fuel lines with efi rated ones. Some people leave them But I will change mine just to be safe. I am pretty sure the copper(?) fuel lines that run from the tank forward will be sweet though, I haven't looked into that yet

thanks guys.

so, what tanks might fit in an AE80 vintage rolla dx sedan? and if i do decide to rangi up a solution, could i just drill (after emptying and cleaning the tank of course!) and weld a return fitting into my current tank? seems the easier option. then grab an external pump. might go that way.

I have an ae82 tank that i have just taken out, it has an up rated fuel pump in it as well as it was used in my race car

i usually modify the existing fuel tank,
imo its easier and you know the tank is going to fit no worries

carb systems run low pressure the factory rubber hose will not withstand the pressure from a efi pump,
most carb setups have a mechanical lift pump on the engine, nothing in tank.

the carb feed out of the tank is usually small,

i use the factory fuel supply as the return, any return fuel isnt under much pressure, the carb fuel lines handle it fine

i then weld in a new fuel pick up and supply into the tank, normally 3/8 in size and run new fuel lines to the engine as required,

and run an external fuel pump

copper line is fine to use, i like to weld fittings on the end of it to use pushlock hose tails etc, not a big fan of just hose clamping rubber hose to the copper tube,

keep in mind that most of the fuel hose from supercheap / repco etc is low pressure not rated for efi, it does tend to swell up and burst
it can take a bit of hunting around to find the right stuff, its usually around $45pm anything a lot cheaper id be wary of.

i usually go straight to hydralink,

Does that give fuel surge problems?
As I thought EFI tanks had fuel bowls in them and Carb ones dont as the carb acts as the surge tank?

I know the older stuff was like that.

hmmm, so long as the tank is kept near full, it should be ok? its not for racing, just a daily driver + fun :)

i havent had any issues with surge before,
then again if there was any doubt or if it was a serious weapon i would fit an additional pump and a surge tank to the system

do NOT use copper lines!!

with age they become brittle and break leading to a fuel leak and potentual fire.

Use steel lines

Hey Vertigo. If you want to ditch your carb wiring loom can you flick a pm my way? I'm needing to temporarily go the other way. from EFI back to carb to run my race engine in on the road. So won't be needing to use loom for the sensors etc

my current loom is for a 2A engine, probably unsuitable for you if you have a 4AGE. i wont be taking it out of the car for a while yet anyway, but if you can wait a few months, ill probably have it out by then.
