Your starter could be
A. out of brushes, not the most likely as it usually wont click (solenoid earths via brushes and if theyre out it wont earth and make a click noise, but if theyre really low but not completely run out, it will be enough to earth through but not enough to turn motor over)
B. Solenoid contacts need replacing (the starter is engaging 'click', but there is no circuit from your main Batt supply to the motor supply via solenoid contacts)
C. Your Battery is flat.
So start with a jumper battery you KNOW is good (not you THINK)
if that doesnt work,
get a test light and a friend,
earth the test light clip (a good earth, the block or the battery)
put the test probe to the main battery supply on the starter,
it should light up to show you that you have a good earth and obviously battery supply at the starter.
Now probe the excite terminal on the starter (the small wire)
Get your Friend to turn the key to start,
if the test light lights up go to step 1a, if not go to step 1b.
1b. Check the start relay has battery supply on the terminal marked 30, Earth on the terminal 85 (clip the test light to power to check for earth)
A circuit between 87 and the excite terminal on the starter (use a jumper wire between 30 and 87 with your test light probed into the starter end of the excite wire and power on 86 when the key is in crank position.
1a. Now put the test probe to the motor side of the solenoid, get your friend/mother/cousin to turn the key to start.
If it goes clunk/click and the test light doesnt light up you have faulty solenoid contacts ($12.5 for a set)
If it goes clunk/click and the test light lights up (but doesnt motor) your out of brushes (pull it off and take it to your sparky)
god that hurt, hope i covered all the basics
