Help, Starter Motor continiously spins
Hi
Just finished hooking the wires back up on my 4k, the wireing is for and auto and im running a 4 speed manual ( not sure if that makes any difference) .
so i have doen everything the same as in my parts car which ran, (also auto) but when i connect the battrey the starter motor spins straight away but it does not engage either ,
there are only four wires in the bunch that goes to the starter motor
Black with white stripe (ignition)
main + lead
pain white wire (?)
black wire with red stripe (?)
if some k series magition could tell me what wire goes to where it would be much apprecieated
thanks in advance
Matt

Just had a quick look in my manual + out at my starlet and...
Can't see bugger all of the starter, but it looks to me that:
Black (fat) feeds directly to battery
Black with white stripe (ignition) fits to the solinoid I think on the starter
I have no other wires attatched to mine that I can see as it earths through the engine.
How many wires are you connecting? The key isn't in the start position is it when you connect the battery?
If none of the above helps, you may have to remove the starter and test its working correctly on a bench.

they way that you have it sounds right , i have the black with whit stripe connedted to the solinoid and the positive lead and a white wire connected to the bolt setup on the back of the starter, i think the white wire may be the prblem because i don't think i have a netural safety switch.
ill try just removing the white wire thismorning and fingers crossed it will solve it then
Cheers

the whole engine and gearbox setup was from a starlet , ive had it all running about a month ago, but i have just gone through and swapped the wires from my parts car, ( this may sound like where the problem is but it was just a simple plug in job so cant stuff that up) because they were rangi as, and i wanted to tidy it up a bit.
it cranked over a few weeks ago so i know it can do it,
so i have just set it up so that I only have the + lead and the ignition lead connected up but when i turn the key it just clicks,
battery is stuffed and will not hold charge so i had jumper leads on but could this still stop it from not having enough power to crank?
alot of mumbo jumbo info there that hopfully someone can makes sense of haha

Your starter could be
A. out of brushes, not the most likely as it usually wont click (solenoid earths via brushes and if theyre out it wont earth and make a click noise, but if theyre really low but not completely run out, it will be enough to earth through but not enough to turn motor over)
B. Solenoid contacts need replacing (the starter is engaging 'click', but there is no circuit from your main Batt supply to the motor supply via solenoid contacts)
C. Your Battery is flat.
So start with a jumper battery you KNOW is good (not you THINK)
if that doesnt work,
get a test light and a friend,
earth the test light clip (a good earth, the block or the battery)
put the test probe to the main battery supply on the starter,
it should light up to show you that you have a good earth and obviously battery supply at the starter.
Now probe the excite terminal on the starter (the small wire)
Get your Friend to turn the key to start,
if the test light lights up go to step 1a, if not go to step 1b.
1b. Check the start relay has battery supply on the terminal marked 30, Earth on the terminal 85 (clip the test light to power to check for earth)
A circuit between 87 and the excite terminal on the starter (use a jumper wire between 30 and 87 with your test light probed into the starter end of the excite wire and power on 86 when the key is in crank position.
1a. Now put the test probe to the motor side of the solenoid, get your friend/mother/cousin to turn the key to start.
If it goes clunk/click and the test light doesnt light up you have faulty solenoid contacts ($12.5 for a set)
If it goes clunk/click and the test light lights up (but doesnt motor) your out of brushes (pull it off and take it to your sparky)
god that hurt, hope i covered all the basics

PM me for anything autoelectrical, Info or jobs etc....
Got a photo of the wire connecting to the starter? Sounds like the leads weren't connected to the right bits when you first posted.
Also does it still need the auto neutral safety switch... did you bypass it?

Had a similar thing on my AW11. Drove around ignorant to the fact that the starter was spinning then it wouldn't start (just clicked) because the bearing thing had shat itself.
Thought I had wayy bigger problems as the starter was generating power and sending it back through the loom causing the car to cut out at high revs

Thanks 3trona , I will get a test lamp tomorrow and try that , it sounds like it should sort it out
tried different combinations of wires for 4 hours today with no luck to had to give up before i smashed my head into the wall haha
PC i tried to take a photo but the pictures willnot come out, , im not sure weather i need the auto neutral safety switch, when i had it running last time i bypassed the starter relay though as i didnt have one, and now trying to use one i cant get it to go
on closer inspection it could possibly be the starter relay thats macking the clicking noise? not sure if they could even make a noise though, i wish i wasnt such a noob with cars !!!!111!!!!
