hey bit off topic for toyspeed but the misses is getting a 97 misti RVR with the 1.8 GDI engine and tiptronic. So what is GDI and how well do these things go?

GDI is direct injection. If I recall HRT's ranting correctly, they are to be avoided like the plague.

make sure u always run it on 98 or it will carbon up like a bi*tch. give it a sweet engine flush aswell and put good quality oil in it.

Gasoline Direct Injection. They carbon up running NZ fuel (a lot, not all), they're gutless, they don't save you any petrol etc etc.

And they're a Mitsi

Seen many throttle bodies being fixed due to carbon build up for running the cheaper fuel (cant be much worse than the guy i saw putting 91 in his st205 gt4  )

mate has the 2.4l legnum, slightly different but the car goes well and is a bloody nice car inside and out

not exactly the same, slight differences , smaller turbo, less power etc. gearbox and diffs have mildly different ratios too. the turbo ones are actually a really nice car. talk the mrs into getting one of them

I used to think that untill i bought a 2002 glxi misti wagon. Its got the 1.8 ltr n/a gs engine, and it drives really well. I use it as a trade vehicle and its been great. It even took a hit at 80 kms in the arse from a new Camry and came off better than the much heavier Camry :) (a pregnant woman crashed into me on Wednesday :( )

mitsi make some okay cars, but they make at least as many not so okay ones too.anything with GDI badges or tiptronic transmissions are defintely on the shit list.

if she must have an RVR get a proper auto, or a manual. and get a 2 litre one, the 4G63 is not a bad unit ;)

Only the early GDI motors have the problem with the manifolds caking up with carbon. Due to the lean burn direct injection, they run a high amount of EGR than normal motors to aid with lower emissions - the early GDI engines (from introduction in 96 until about 98/99ish) had alloy manifolds with a rough surface inside which the carbon from the EGR stuck to. The later model ones have a bakelite manifold which is smooth and don't have the same issues.

Bear in mind they are quite an advanced type of engine, and perhaps they were produced with not enough research and development gone into them. The system works great in ideal conditions such as with Japan's high quality and mostly high octane fuel, and the system has been licenced by many other manufacturors such as Renault and even Toyota (think D4-D petrol motors).

They *can* be run on lower octane fuel, the ECU is more than capable of running it to suit the lower octane, but there will be a reduction in power and economy for sure.

They got a really bad reputation right from the start here in NZ as when the masses of used jap imports flooded in, no one had experience with them here before as they weren't sold NZ-new (with the exception of a GDI pajero, but they're not common), and mechanics were all baffled on how to repair them.

If you do get one, make sure it has a good service history and get it thoroughly checked out by an experienced Mitsubishi mechanic who knows what they're looking for. They're not a bad car but they definitely wont stand up the abuse and neglect that Toyotas can handle.

Cheers fuel, sheds more light on it. By manafold im gessing your talking exhaust, so upgrade to later model exhaust may reduce the problem? As for gear box, as long as is better than here current gaylant which is auto and has now started to pop out of drive, or not go in drive from any thing other than park, but only now and again.

By the way people the galants for sale, '95 auto, PM me for a look. Will put more info in the for sale thread soon

We bought a Galant VRG bout 6 months back. only thing we noticed was noisy lifters. When i pulled the cam cover (big job) we found half an inch of sludge covering everything (everything) I ended up stripping the motor down and cleaning the whole lot. i got 4 litres of sludge out of the engine. Now its mint, round town its a pig on gas, about 420km to 65L on the open road its amazing, we did Palmy north to Hamilton 404km on 32L of gas.
My suggestion if you are not mechanically minded, and do lots of round town driving stay away from them.
Oh and we ripped out half of the EGR system while we were cleaning the engine, as well as polishing the inlet runners and a few other bits & pieces.

nah I mean inlet manifold. It's quite a weird setup, the inlet manifold mounts to the top of the cylinder head where the spark plugs are.

Here's a bit more info - http://autospeed.com/cms/A_2977/article.html

and a pic of it:

the 1.8 is a guttless sack of shit. they have the misti cam tick they also have some weird EGR which gunks up with crap.

did i mention there gutless. if you REALLY have to get on e get a v6 6a13 not a 4G93

mum had a legnum guess why its gone.

cam covers leak. and the stupid plenum is in the middle so you have to take it all off.

the 1.8 is gutless because it's in a heavy Legnum usually - drive a Lancer or Carisma with the same 1.8 GDI and it's a completely different experience. It's a practical economy car, not a performance car.

Most Mitsubishis have the hydraulic lifter 'tick', but so do alot of other manufacturors like Mazda, Nissan etc. It is usually masked by using a bottle of Promo MBL8 every oil change, or bite the bullet and replace the lifters for about $240 for the set.

I completely forgot that all other manufacturors are completely exempt from getting leaking rocker covers - god forbid that the rubber ages and leaks over time. Yes it's a hassle taking the inlet manifold off but it's no worse than doing the same on a V6 Camry for example.
