My thoughts exactly.
Its not that the cops needed to lay off, its that the cops needed to be harder on the guy.

Also, I haven't heard of any mention of a shotgun, they were saying on the news that he had a sawn off .22 rifle.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Sorry if I value human life over a stolen handbag.

Or make the decision to shoot to kill to protect public safety. There would be fewer runners if there was a chance they would blow your brains out.

Hmm... I think that would lead to more people starting to shoot straight away rather than running.

No, putting public safety at risk for the sake of a handbag is bs. 20 police cars is excessive. I hope someone fries for this.

The pursuit began in Glen Eden at about 1.08pm after the driver of a car pointed a gun at an officer who attempted to stop him.

I don't think anyone knows the 'facts' beyond what the sensationalist media has conveyed.

It is however, pretty clear that someone with a gun was persued at high speed through suburbia. It was always going to end in tradgedy.

The Police have 'given up' for too long, which is why crime has become such an increasing issue!

Of course, I can't really blame the Police officers themselves, as they're just following protocol thats been set out for them.

Personally, I think todays events are a good sign, apart from the innocent being killed. It shows that the Police are no longer going to tollerate this kind of bullshit and are actually going to pull out the stops to protect the society we live in from people who think they can get away with that sort of bollocks!

Also, it became more than a stolen handbag issue when the crim pulled a gun on a pursuing officer.

Also, it was revealed that the crim pulled a gun on the officer at the press conference, which was broadcast on TV.

I don't have the answers to what should have been done, but if the guy wasn't persued, it's highly unlikely anyone would have been hurt.

Press conference I saw at 6pm said this was only at the end of the 'chase' once the skyline was stopped.

But it also sends a message that he can get away with it.

What happened today sends the message that you can't get away with it, which will make people think twice in the future before they try something like that. It leads to a decrease in crime.

Just like when your mum spanked you as a kid for doing something naughty. Made you think twice about doing it again.

I said I don't have the answers. I did not suggest they should just let them go, all I said was that it is unlikely someone would have been hurt, much less killed if they had not entered into a crazy chase.

Yeah I'm pretty much with Mr Revhead here man. Ok, so on the most basic level perhaps someone wouldn't have been hurt/killed at that place and time. But I for one expect the sort of person to go out and commit crime while carrying a loaded gun to use it eventually.

I'm all for police chasing people. Especially when there's danger to the public during the chase. I sometimes feel from what I see in the news that we're not actually aggressive enough in these chases. (What's that thing on that american cop show? the pit or something? Never seen or heard of NZ police using this sort of tactic even if they do - it's all spike strips, road blocks or the chasee crashing.) I wouldn't think that hanging further back would make someone slow down or drive taking less risks. They still want to get away completely.

Complicated issue for sure, but if I'm hit and killed as an innocent bystander whether by the cops or by the crims, I'm blaming the runner. I'd so totally haunt his arse too.
