Clicking noises on turning, but doesn't sound like CV joints

Postby kim0663 » Thu Jan 29, 2009 2:25 am

Car is a bzr, was fine. Launched it a bit harsh yesterday and now it makes a funny rapid clicking noise when turning right (worse on round abouts) .

Is it the lsd thats stuffed? It seems it clicks louder if i give it some gas during a corner and i say lsd coz thats all i can think of atm... so Thinking of changing gear oil as it's kinda hard to put into 2nd gear as well. Could it be oil problems?

Anyone had this problem before?

I'd be a bit careful on this one. Sounds like it could possibly be cvjoint noise but those bzr boxes do give up the ghost when they get a hard life.
Does it only click just on turning corners? or does it click when you accelerate quckly in a straight line? Just seems a bit coincidental it makes that noise when turning after you did a launch. best indication is to drain the oil and inspect it very carefully. If it's got silver streaks in it or majorly silver coloured oil then you've definitely got internal issues with the gearbox. Does it just make the sound on right lock only or both left and right?First thing to do would be find a quiet street OR a large carpark, turn hard lock left and right while applying the brake and accelerating, you must accelerate enough so the engine doesn't stall. go from one lock to other. If it's just on right lock and goes away when you straighten the wheel then chances are your left outer cv joint is had it. I'd try this method first to eliminate cv noise. There'd be nothing worse than changing gearbox oil and find you've still got the same noise, but you did say it's hard to change into 2nd. :?
So do cv test first, check for split cv boots when you jack it up and put axle stands under it.

second has always been a bad gear for hard launch in bzr's sounds like a pull down.
on a side not. a mate just got a 101 and the guy told him it was cv's clicking but it was actually the loose wheel nuts 8O

IF it would be gearbox, then it would not click, it would shudder, thump and lock the wheels up until most of the teeth are broken on ring and pinion.

considering you're asking about gearbox oil in your other tech thread, it probably is the gear box :P Vote one for loose wheel nuts though. My celica clicked like a mofo...then a realised 5 wheel nuts between the rear wheels were losse

It's bloody quiet in corners now lol, oil looked like it was NEVER changed in it's 100,000kms of life ! jesus, never seen oil as brown as that. Had some silver specs too but it's going fine now, not TOO worried at the moment

Thank god it's not a pull down lol

A bit funny tho, only 1.9L ish of oil came out and a bit more went in so oil may have been low and ran the the diff a bit dry or something? possible?

Even if there was roughly that amount of oil that came out i doubt it'd have run the diff dry. just being the fact most toyota boxes take "about" 2 litres of oil. Would have lost the friction qualities in the oil for the lsd if it stopped clicking in the box. Being lsd could have been chattering in the lsd on corners. Poor lsd boxes with old oil

My GTT caldina has a clicky noise going straight ahead and on left corners, been through three machanics now, the last being toyota in Albany, all have said Rfront CV (which has now been changed twice) Have changed the wheel bearing also,
Toyota basically gave up, first said it was the CV (I told them no) then the wheel bearing, which i'd just changed (bought the part off them and had them do the pressing) they replaced it again (made no difference to the noise) now say can't be fixed without full rebuild of gearbox and transfer,, is it possible i'm suffering a similar problem?

try an oil change (decent oil) before you dig out $$$$$$$$$ for a gearbox pull down...
