"This is not boy racer activity. This is thuggery."

Lets crackdown on the thugs not the boyracers :P I mean car enthusiasts

The finance companies will be on top of that quite quickly I'd imagine. But it raises an interesting point.
Why are these people permitted to modify cars that are on hire purchase?
Theoretically the car remains the property of the finance company until such time as it has been paid off. Why are they allowing them to be modified/devalued? Perhaps the credit contracts act could be changed in relation to motor vehicle finance to make this illegal and provide for immediate repossession.
I might suggest this to Judith Collins.

Because they just do it and don't tell anyone. And the company that modifys the vehicle aren't going to check because then they would lose a decent chunk of their business

Because they chuck the mods on finance too

"Secondly I think what it demonstrates is the law is not working because the vast bulk of those people are actually in breach of the law, so the law needs to change."

Well see, if you're turning up with one police car to give 300 people tickets...

this is slightly worrying wording as it could have a very broad interpretation of what justifies an offence, and the penalties they are talking about seem very harsh for what could be a relatively minor event...

that is encouraging, now the 'boy racer' culture is well established in chch i think it will be difficult to curb.

I somehow think finance companies would have something to say if police started crushing cars...all these cars on tick dont actually belong to the munter thrashing it.

Yep thats my concern too...I'm going to write a letter to an MP I think, any law that gets rushed through like this will have massive consequences for anyone into cars.

im all for crushing if it gets things back to where it should be, if you are a continuous problem crush the f**kin thing, problem sorted......till you get caught behind the wheel of someone else's car, then crush that too.....if your mate is dumb enough to let you do it, he deserves it.

Should be three strikes your out, if you get caught doing stupid shit, bad luck but they wont crush it till you get caught the third time. That will make you think about doing it next time.

All police cars should have 360 degree cameras in them for safety of officer, evidence in cases and this kind of thuggery.

Or maybe on of them rubber bullet hand grenades and panel the culprits make it harder for them to hide

I'm still against crushing cars, it's just wasteful in so many ways.

Put the drivers in the crusher, it'll make the world a better place.

In one way the boyracers/thugs are being dick heads but i another way, the police had it coming. The laws are getting harsher and harsher on car modification, it was eventually going to spark some sort of rebellion. Im not saying I am with the boyracers for doing it but I was expecting something to happen soon enough.

This sucks, I guess I can expect to get pulled over and followed a whole lot more.

There are no true enthusiasts left in the Christchurch cruise scene, we all got out years ago when these troublesome posers took over.

More laws isn't the answer, more effective policing of the current ones is. Fill the city with Police cars Friday and Saturday night. Put a checkpoint on Bealey Ave trap all the rats in there and search every car, throw the book at them. They're breaking more than just road laws, there's underage drinking, breach of liquor ban, and I bet a whole heap of non-association orders and curfews.
It will cost a lot, will require a helluva lot of Police and some temporary cells but I see it as the only way.
Also they need to do this every weekend until the problem is on the decline, not just one weekend.

Yea, its the other way round. The laws get harsher because certain people don't obey the law!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

eddy1612 you say the laws are getting harsher on car modification but the police had it coming.sounds like your beef is with the law makers not the police.

problem = some boy racers are retards
problem 2= media hype the backlash from the retard boy racers goes to far ie crush their cars and leads to tougher laws on all car lovers etc

solution= well a slower well thought out solution not 1 thats rushed through government using media hype fueled from boy racer extremists.

real solution= revhead for dictatorship!

selling them cheap only hands them back to the muppets that had them seized in the first place. selling them for top dollar hands money back to the offender.

Pretty sure they wouldnt be able to buy them on the fact that they have lost their licence, and any funds from selling the cars would go to paying off existing fines.
no, but there equally retardard mates buy a marked 'goon' car, and continue the cycle.
if the funds from the sale are higher than the fines to be remitted, the courts send the munter a cheque for the balance
