knocking noise ? ae92

Postby Guss » Sat Feb 14, 2009 6:42 pm

my ae92 gt corolla has developed a knocking noise (around 4 time a sec) while cruising along at 60kph in 4th and 5th.
It began with a loud knock when accelerating hard in 1st.
CV's do not click while turning hard and if load is increased from cruise to accel it is no longer noticeable.
I think it might be there at motorway speeds too but not 100% sure.

any suggestions as to what it could be

Check your wheel nuts. Is it a knock from the engine, or under the car? more details :)

noise is coming from front left (of drivers eat at least), wheel nuts are fine only really noticeable in 4th and 5th cruising at 60kph. other sppeds it's ok and accelerating from to and around 60 it goes away only at cruise is it noticeable.

cornering load has no affect.
its actually more frequent than the 4/sec i posted originally maybe 10/sec.

have an idea that it could be something in the gearbox ?

diff has been really whiny since i got it 8 months ago, fluid was changed and no real difference.

everything is stock except lowering springs.

Is the knocks/sec the same between 4th and 5th? That being the case, it won't be engine related.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.
