4age Blacktop 20v Rebuild Suggestions

Postby rx7guy » Sat Apr 04, 2009 9:06 pm

Hey there,

I picked up a complete blacktop recently and it has eaten number three big end. Im looking to keep it basically standard and put in in an ae85 which will see trackdays etc.

From what I have read all 42mm cranks are the same, including the gze. Is it better to resize the journal, or just replace the crank with any 42mm? With this I am looking to use silvertop rods, arp rod bolts from fortyone.co.nz (cheap) and the blacktop pistons. I will probably give the ports a tidy up.

Does this sound like a suitable setup?

Can anyone recommend bearings/rings/gaskets to use? Is it worth going to trd race bearings etc? Or just go to supercheap auto? Also is it worth getting everything balanced?

Cheers, Aidan

Yes cranks are the same, and IMO replace it rather than re-size it.
and go genuine for the parts, or ACL race bearings, and Toyota rings.

Sounds like a suitable setup to me with the ST rods.

Haha mean deal I reckon.

Thanks for your input guys. What about balancing though, is it normally done on a 4age?

Don't use the ACL rings what ever you do. Genuine only!! I made this mistake & regretted it. Smokey, smokey is all I can say (probably could have done with over sized pistons & rings but that's someone else's problem now)

supercheap are around 60odd big ends and 80odd for mains atm, repco.. even staff price doesnt beat that.

Iv use acl rings on a mates blacktop and it doesn't use oil or smoke... made him get the block honed by a shop so they bed in right

Does your problem come down to the ACL rings or the fact the engine was rebuilt wrong though? :?

Probably best to state you are getting a hookup if you are quoting prices, otherwise people will think thats the retail price.
