Standard hiace manual gearbox behind high hp motor..?

Postby larryex » Sat Apr 11, 2009 9:47 pm

Hi guys. Anyone had much to do with standard Hiace boxes behind 1UZs or JZ motors?
I have had a 2JZGE (auto) and now a 1JZGTE (auto) in my one for some time now. At the times of these conversions the parts required to keep the van manual were very dear (bellhousings, flywheels, etc) but now they are a lot cheaper I am contemplating putting her back to manual again. The 2JZ NA motor was happy with the auto box, but this JZ GTE motor could do with a manual. My question - have any of you lads had a standard manual Hiace box ( what are they anyway, a W52 or G52 or something?) behind a Lexus v8 or a supra motor; have they lasted and handled it? I have seen on Youtube the odd hiace with a 1UZ and manual box, (usually doing circle work) but a 1JZ with the wick wound up has a fair bit more power and torque then these, so unsure it would take it. Of course the only prob with the van is that only a standard van box will work - converting a floor shift W58 or R154 to rod change for use in a van.. bit tricky. Any experiences or ideas helpful.
Cheers, Chris

Done a couple with G5# boxes and they are good. Although you can break anything! Pipers is a G53 box and he has not broken it so maybe they are FOOLproof!

Some vans have the R15# boxes which are supposed to be stronger.

Check on the id tag and if it is a R15# then it will be good. If it is a G5# then it should be ok.

You are not wrong there! I did give it one secret touch that may have helped but I still though it would have passed away long ago!

For those who don't know the gearbox in question is in a 4WD Hilux (1999) which I put a 1UZFE into about 5years ago. Since then it has been towing rally cars around the country and been given total death with no problems!
