Blacktop full of crap under rocker cover

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Wed Apr 15, 2009 8:58 pm

Just being emailed these pics of a newly purchased corolla wagon, running a 4AGE Blacktop. Done around 180,000km from memory...

Any idea what it would be from? and whats the best way to clean it off?

How can anyone neglect something so poorly? I bet it reflects in other aspects of their life too.
If that was my car I'd remove the head and get it cleaned out by an engine builder or just go straight to a second hand engine. The rest of the engine has prob suffered too as a result and the sump would also need removing and cleaning.

Thats the WhaleOil camshaft anti-scuff lubricant that is used at the
factory for break in. Looks as so the lid fell off the can when they put
that engine together !!!

are you bored again, or being serious? :? car is running fine, this was just noticed while doing an oil change etc...
ive read 20v's get a oily-buildup due to failed pcv valve or something, but thats on the TB's and i'd imagine it wuold only be a fine buildup, nothing this bad?!

theres two ways to go about this.
1, leave it alone and act like its not there :P like you said its running fine now
2, complete tear down and acid bath for about 3 times. block and head. (that's how long it took to clean my blacktop head)

what ever you do DON'T be tempted to try and clean it out your self, or you'll block up the oil pickup and fuk the motor.

this happens because in japan. they never service there cheap runarounds. they have so much faith in the quality of the toyota name that they assume it will never die. so just top up the oil when needed.

also the blacktop suffers from the sludge build up worse then any other motor ever made. (if not serviced)

^^exactly what i told him, apparently its quite hard/caked on too, so would easily block any oil galleries. not causing problems right now, so why fix it

For lols do an engine flush

Did you need to grab a new seal for the cam cover or is it rubber? Keen to know what mines like, but not if I have to replace the seal.

Strip the engine apart, remove sump remove cams, remove buckets etc, remove all seals, remove head, buy shitloads of paint stripper, soak the engine, head and all affected metal parts in it for prolong period. Get all new seals, as originals will be hard as rock.
Or get another second hand engine.
This happens when people skip oil changes on regular basis (also includes regular distance oil changes and lots of idling traffic, or million 2 min. trips.)

yea as sergei said, thats awesomely nasty to look at.
Luke: my blacktops a rubber seal, but be careful when you put it back together, make sure seal is in the groves in the cover and head, if its not it will leak like a sieve. I drove from palmy to waioru and lost 1L of oil, fixed next morn before driving home tho

Hey... if the engine was running OK, the best thing to do is just do
several oil changes with cheap oil. Drain it, fill it up with fresh, and run
it until the oil is nice and black (won't take long). Drain it and fill it with
fresh, and run it... etc... etc.

If you run engine flush you will shake so much crap loose that you will
block the pickup and galleries. Cheap oil just acts like a weak solvent
and breaks the crap down gradually.

As said, lack of servicing. Certain oils are worse for doing it than others.

If you really want to get rid of it then remove rocker cover and sump, and waterblast the hell out of everything. Likely only get some of it off. Best bet (if you can be bothered) is remove the head and get it cleaned properly. I'd be getting the sump off and making sure the pickup is clean. Have had to clean up a 4E with insides just like that which had the engine light flicking on from a blocked pickup.

My old silvertop head looked just like that too. Heaps and heaps of build up that you just about had to chisel off. Quick bath at the reconditioners and it looked like this...

I had a Pulsar that looked like that under the covers, gave it an oil change, poked around at the sludge a bit, cleaned up as much as possible.. was driving around the next day, the oil light flickered on, drove it home (I have little to no mechanical sympathy for sub $1500 cars!), ended up stripping the sump off, pickup was clogged almost solid! Cleaned it out, had no worries at all after that! :)
