Who in Auckland can do roll cages??

Postby Bazda » Thu Apr 23, 2009 9:48 am

I'm after a half cage for the levin very soon.
Anyone know of good places with good prices in the auckland area???

And no i'm not going to TGA, or Herbert fabrication etc as the price is a bit too much for me.

Also i've been told alot of people use some sort of mild steel which is really soft. Anyone know the deal with this?

Cheers

Just found out for a 10s cage the material has to be thicker than a motorsport cage.
1 1/2" Vs 1 5/8"

To use normal steel in the 1 5/8th is heavy as!!!, so the only option looks like chromolly as you can run a smaller wall thickness over the normal steel.

in a car with 30odd metres of tubing in it - full cage, the difference in weight between RollCage Tubing and Chrome Moly is approx 7kg. Chrome Moly is very finiky to work with, a couple of years ago one of the WRC cars has a major crash the the moly cage BROKE part way along the tubes.......

Mild Steel rollcage tubing (its name from steel & tube) is my preference for cages. I think NZDRA/NZHRA cages have to be chrome moly - personally i think that is a stupid rule. and I also think most NZDRA/NZHRA cages are built with VERY strange designs

I got a guy who used to work for herbert fabrication who is going to do me one at a good price. But if I can source the material cheaper than thats better.

I dont want to be adding in some crazy weight into the car.

Yea its a stupid rule, why do they have to be different!
The difference in mild steel and moly for 38.1x2.5mm isnt too bad, but when you get to the 1 5/8" the difference is much more.

But looks like i'll build it to meet the NZDRA rules but also so it will meet track events as well so will have a few more bars over the normal 10s cage.

looking at getting a cage built for my jza70 at some stage, dads already got the tubing. we were thinking of basing it off the ma70 supra that was raced at bathurst. i've got a lot of detailed pictures on it. would this be enough for track days and the like? or be better to take the pictures to a cage builder and talk to them about it?

Might just throw the idea of the 10s cage away for now. Its too $ and I wont even be going back to the drags for ALONG time.

For now I just want a cage to make the car a bit safer on the track.

I found a guy whos giving me a good deal.
Cage would cost me around $500-600 for a mild steel half cage with sied intrusions.

Crap that's a good deal! I'd do that if I could get the same deal?

How much would the cage weigh?
