W55 VS R154

W55 VS R154

Hey guys, just been doing a bit of searching on 1JZ manual options and there's the two main (cheap-ish) options, the W5* and the R154. I guess there's always the V160 or J160 (which one is it? Always skips me!)

Here's the thing, I already have a mint W55, so the price of that excluded, a niteparts bellhousing and flywheel combo is $1000 with the clutch kit on top of that. (That's if you get an auto to start with) and from what I've seen, R154's seem to be in the $1000-$1500 mark (or am I way off??) If that's the case, is it worth the few hundred more and just go for a R154? Or the other thing, are genuine JZ-W bellhousings and flywheels availiable for less than the niteparts bits?

Any ideas?

You'll be very lucky to find genuine jz bellhousings and flywheels 2nd hand, and prices are likely to be at least as much as the niteparts items - and the niteparts flywheels are cnc machined steel too, so not really any comparison to factory cast junk!!

I ran a w55 behind a 220rwkw 1j in a jzz30 soarer and it was fine - I had skatey tyres and mellow clutch tho, which helped keep the box in one piece. They are getting close to their limit behind a strong jz, a late w58 would be better (also better ratios), but really It'll come down to how its driven.

R154s are stronger, and 1000-1500 sounds cheap to me. Be wary that you're not buying one with a 7m bellhousing instead of jz! Also keep in mind that the jz clutches for R154 were a pull clutch which are alot more mucking around (and $$) than the normal push type for a w5*

Oh wow, interesting! Good points there, I guess W boxes are a tonne cheaper to replace if the need does arise.

Not in anything, only hypothetical at this point :-) It'd be lighter than a Soarer or Supra tho and like you, would probably not have very grippy or wide tires on it.

Just trying to work through what I want to do and where I want to go!

do the M bells not suit JZ's? i've seen one or two trademe auctions that said they were the same

Clutches for the R154 aren't really more expensive than any other similar clutch, I bought an exedy sports tuff 5 puck clutch for mine for the same price I paid for my 3 puck I used on the W58 (~$750)

just a point to remember there are two diff types of r154

external linkage
and
internal linkage

external linkage ones come out mostly in jzx100/110 chassis cars and have the gear lever placed back alot further

if a r154 came up for 1g i would be very concernd about its state, lol or the dude doesnt know what he has haha
i think from memory they suffer the same issues as the v160's but i could be wrong

1500 is still dam good buying
but yea flywheels and clutch set ups are rather $$$$

i have herd syncros
but like i say i could be real wrong here
due to the fact i have only " herd " and not " seen "

i know there is a release bearing upgrade for the r154 box's tho

1st gear thrust bearing/washer was the only issue I know of with them
