I've always been under the impression that demerit points are given for unacceptable driving behaviour, not unacceptable vehicle modification.

Surely there will be a bit discretion if the plate can't quite fit inside the factory space. Probably designed more for those twats who "french" their plate by removing/moving a screw and have it on a lean

I agree, it's aimed at cars with relocated plates or plates in the windows (but this is already covered in other law), however, are we to allow the police to use guesswork too? More great policy draftmanship by NZ politicians.

More often than not, people who get done, deserve it. So why create a new policy rather than an ammendment?

Discretion is fine for ordinary policework, but in an emotionally charged media frenzied topic like 'boyracers', it's bad form, especially when with a little bit of thought it could be made black and white.

If it was black and white, and people knew where they stood, then nobody would have a problem. It's the ambiguity and confusion that causes anger and resentment, and also prompts people to rebel and push the boundaries.

I'm not sure thats the case. Its more a case of fighting against the police for a lot of the people this new bill is aimed at. They already ignore the laws, so imposing different methods of punishment (demerits) might help.

If you push the boundaries you do so knowing there may be consequences. I don't have a problem with them targeting 'boyracers'. People think i'm one too as my car is modified, without even knowing me I get put in that group. HOWEVER, with the exception of minor speeding I will not get in trouble with any of the new bill rules and my car is always up to standard. So unless I started to act like a the fool, I have nothing to worry about. The police may well pull me over more often for random checks, who knows, but I don't fear getting unfairly treated due to the new bill.

I think that crushing cars of the worst offenders (well fine dodgers) is probably a good idea. However I think that the police already have enough powers to deal with trouble makers, giving them more laws they can enforce subjectively is dangerous.

A worthy point of note is also that car crushing is a penalty for street racing in other countries, yet those countries still have street racing present which suggests to me that perhaps it doesnt actually work.

i guess i fit right in with the so called boyracers i have a modifyed car its lowered on 19s has a big exhaust and i do the aves and by me doing this makes me a criminal even tho im not driving dangerously or destroying property and i thort i was paying for the roads im driving on why dont i get to use them? What else is there to do as i dont really go to pubs and how do you follow someone you know without being in a convoy?

What it should include is the right to fine someone for looking fukin stupid while driving. Seat almst lying flat with the base, hoody up (clearly its not raining or windy inside the car), the other 6 people in the car looking no different and more interested in whats driving beside them while giving them rude gestures. Everybody knows the ones, english seems to fail them even though it is the only language they were taught...
