Best Place For Engine Swap

Are there garages in dunedin that deal with engine swaps/conversions?

I'm keen on swapping a 3SGTE or a 3SGE Beams into my celica. It currently has the 3sge. Power aim is 200bhp but want to have a chat with someone about the transmission, clutch, work involved and mainly cost.
I really like the 4ws and tems suspension so dont really want a gt4 and i have never seen it done on a 4ws celica, i would imagine it would have great handling.

I think this would be a cool project and a good street car.

Who do you recommend?

I would say research, research and research... and then doing it some where like home or a mates place. this will save you a shiiiiiit load. i think some where that would do a conversion like this would cost something around the $2-3k mark.

There was a guy on here (cant rememeber the name) that did a 3SGTE swap into a ST182 and was FWD. He was on here for a bit... pissing me off i cant remember his name! :x some one will rememeber and might be able to point you in his direction.

2-3k? I think thats a bit low tbh, specially if hes not doing any of the work him self. Once you include cost of the motor/box to suite I reckon you would be looking 6-7k min. And if you went 3sgte route, it would be crap to drive. All that power in a FWD you would never actually go anywhere.

OOps i was meaning that the labour from a work shop would be around that amount. so yeah PLUS parts and all that :o

200hp too much for a fwd?
I think Bazda would disagree with you there,
as would most of the BTCC

Do beams 3s imo

Putting the engine in shouldnt bee too hard, be better to put the money into learning and tools/parts than paying someones labour.

Wiring will end up being a hard but enough research would see you home.

Keep in mind that you will probably need another car while this is happening,

Work out how much time you think it would take you, times it by 3.

DOuble it again if you have a mrs :D

Why does everyone assume that a powerful fwd (200bhp isn't powerful btw) is undrivable? :roll: There are plenty of wrong wheel drive's with double that power figure on these forums alone that handle very well.

Mate in my honest opinion it's in your best interests to either learn how to do it yourself or sell the car and get a GT4. You won't get much change from $10k if you get a shop to do it for you - and your car will still be worth a lot less than a GT4 (which are worth less than $5k to start with...)

Hence why I said "If you go the 3s-gte route" yes, bazda does make alot more power. Hes also invested alot more money in suspension/breaking gearboxes etc etc. And can fix it him self when it breaks/can afford to play around with diffrent suspension setups etc. And I'm personally unsure, but would you say it was still a good daily? As in comfort etc? How well is it going to handle at the end of the day, if one of your primary objectives is keeping factory shocks?
Plus insurance for someone your age with a conversion, well yeah might want to ring around and find out for your self, but expect $1500+

Thanks for all the replies,

i was thinking of doing it myself, would be a good learning experience.

What i like about my celica is the 4ws and the tems suspension. As this car is an everyday car, its great for parking, etc, thats one reason i dont want a gt4 and because i have never seen it done on a 4ws before. When it comes to power, it would be nice to have more speed and acceleration.

Like i said, would be a fun project to work on and a good learning experience :D

As for getting a second car, i'll just get something cheap like a starlet.

im not offended, but lately, i got so much free time on my hands and it will keep me going for quite a bit. Plus my dads always here, he's done this in mk3 and mk5 escorts but that was 6 years ago, lol.

Since i decided to do scaffolding instead of being a mechanic, i might as well try and get a bit of experience and learn how to do these sort of things 8)

i cant see how a standard 3sgte gana be 2 much power the came out fwd factory in currens.you could just buy a factory curren but wheres the fun in that??? do it do it do it.it will be the woast decision of you life untill its finished :lol:

The 3SGTE never came off Toyota's factory floor in a FWD vehicle.... :? If he bought a curren he'd be right back where he started....in a fwd n/a celica

yea it was jools, for the price of gt4's buy one of those tbh. You will spend alot of money getting it to grip, especially in the wet.

But yea in all seriousness, gt4 for 3k, try and get a facelift with the better ecu - higher mapped and run it about 15psi. will keep you busy.

I wanted to do the same thing when i had my gtr, ended up jst buying a gt4 facelift. Putting aside the doing it yourself learning experience, its just gonna work out cheaper and better.

does a GT4 have a 2-piece drivehaft, buy one of those and remove the rear section of the shaft, unless the torque split won't behave in that fashion, then fit a FWD box.
FWD, Turbo and cheaper than a conversion.

I'm on the same boat as AJz. When I had my GTR I thought it would be awesome to put a 3sgte in it but when you add up the costs then your already looking at a subi or skyline or something along those lines. So yea it's definatly not worth it for bang for buck. Yea I crashed my GTR and and ended up upgrading to a GT4 definatly worth it I love it. Understand what you mean about the 4ws though I miss it, my gt4 is not good for getting round tight spots has the turning radius of a small truck, haha
