Question for those who know lots about sivertops

Postby Loudtoy » Tue Jun 09, 2009 10:43 pm

Ok i have an issue with the silver top i have in my ae82. Specs are as far as i know, standard everything except has had the head shaved, not sure the exact amount off it, all run off a mega squirt.
The issue i'm having is a lack of torque between 4000 and 5500rpm - it's ok above 5500 and really good above 6k but the problem is it's used 85% of the time on gravel and narrow band of 2100 rpm right at the top isn't really ideal - ok on track but not so good for narrow gravel and unsighted corners. So basicly in short there is a rather large lack of mid range torque - much less than my previous road carwith a silver top.
Now the question for those who know is this.

1 - is it possible that when the head was shaved the timing has been put back to it's original setting and this isn't advanced enough thus giving good top end but bugger all mid range torque?

2 - The mega squirt is tuned like ass through the 4-6k rpm range and that is causing it, if you believe this is the case can i please have a serial cable to plug in and the software to run it on my computer

3 - Has the vvt on point (think but not sure 5000rpm) been set at the wrong point, remember this is only a simple computer with rpm triggers only, no loading or other triggers so has only rpm point for switching.

If you believe 2 or 3 to be the cause cn you hook me up with serial cable and software for a mega squirt.
If you believe 1 to to be the cause can you let me know what you have set timing on other silvertops with shaved heads to

Sounds typical 20v to me  But is it really gutless below 4000, or does it have reasonable low end torque then drop off then pick up again? I'd see if you can run it on the dyno with the VVT switched off, then another run with VVT permanently on, and see where the torque curves intersect

Dyno it to get a true torque graph and sort it out from there.

Dynoing costs precious tire money tho, and it's definately flat, a 1400 sunny was still pulling up the hill we were on, nearly same speed but a gear up as well.
Don't really know must take it out and check that, was during racing that i noticed the lack, just comparing it to me old wagon as i know this one has had shave and been rebuilt 2 rally's previous to me getting it. Old car would have pulled away from it untill 55 where they would have been pretty even from there onwards - other thing i'm wondering about is if the flywheel my have been lightened as well.
Just remeber i may have been spoilt in the way silvertops go by my old one

4. all of the above.

id check afr and ignition map first. then play with the vvt switch point taking note of afr and doing acceleration tests on same bit of road. should go leaner if you going in the right direction, but not allways
