Ignition Barrel Repair AKL

Hey, some awesome fellows decided my car was cool enough to steal last night (kind of flattered). They also managed to out witt the police dog, $&#$%!!!

Unfortunitly my ignition barrel is totaled. Car won't move anywhere, I think a fuse has blown which cut all power to the car so couldn't start it.

Rang Toyota Parts/Service Botany they can order the part in for me but won't come to my house to install.

Anyone know anyone that deals with repairing ignition barrels or can come install it at my house in Mt Wellington? For a Toyota Tercel/Starlet 1997.

Cash jobs are acceptable.

Easiest option is to remove the barrel and use plyers to start the car for now.
Go get a replacement barrel and get the key code from the Toyota dealership. They can find it out from your registration.

Go get the barrel changed and key cut to that code at a Locksmiths.
The new barrel should just slot into place.
Bob should then be your uncle.

Sweet, cheers for your advice.

I found a barrell from a wreaker with the key, so managed to cut the process out.

I have no tools at all.. .anyone need some cash and want to do it?

Last time I replace an ignition barrel it wasn't straightforward. They're rivetted into place with narly big steel rivets

usually bolts
that break off when they reach the correct torque.
a bastard to remove, easy to install

Do you even have to remove the entire barrel??
I have done a few old vechicles and there is usually a trick to just get the guts of the barrel out and then click a new one in. the key does need to work for most of them though but mabey a lock smith can do it quick enough and cheap enough to make it worth while

Exactly, as long as you can get the key barrell to the acc position,
press the locator tab on top and it almost falls out,
slide in the s/h one and you all good to go.

Hardest part for you may be un-doing the column covers.

Nah, it's much easier to just get the lock part out,

even if you have to drill it, have done that many times.
the screws that hold it all to the column are a PITA.

i mean the whole barrel assembly
mates WRX was broken into and they munted the whole barrel, not just the cylinder, trying to start it. obviously n00bs!

that was a mission as we had to pull the thing apart in the middle of a car park

subaru locks are quite different to toyota ones.

If it's any help my old ladys rav 4 ign barrel was locked into acc. We pushed a little gold pin underneath and the lock part came compeltly out and we could start it with a small screwdriver until we got another lock part that day.

Easy as :D

I agree if they have munted the assembely or tried to force the steering lock it may well be best to replace the whole thing, but that can be a real pain especially when you cant get any angle to get those damn break off bolts. cold chisel,drill,hacksaw. sometimes clamping the bracket down tight with vice grips takes enough pressure of the bolts and they are just finger tight

Pretty much all the Toyota's are like that.
Probably just the really late models that may be different.

If you have to remove it all, those screws that hold the barrel assembly on aren't that bad, just need a punch with a good fine, sharp point and hit the edge of the exposed face so that it turns anti-clockwise. once you get a few mm exposed, use vice grips and twist until its out.

OK... Ive brought a new key assembly parts so I dont have the whole barrell but have the bit they wreaked.

I rammed my old key into last night and cranked it with a pilers and have managed to get the car started and driving,, more I use it the more its moving around (still need to turn it back from start to ON or else starter motor keeps firing)

I will have a look for this pop out part.

Locksmith call out was $100 for the first 20min and $25 per 15 after.


Also buying a steering wheel lock tonight... sigh.
