If you prefer hours of pleasurable driving, and much lower repair costs, buy the Toyota

I've had my GTi for a year now and it hasn't caused me any problems barr general wear and tear on a car that is 10 years old.

The last service cost me around the $350 mark plus some things that needed to be fixed.

I haven't had any major issues on the electrical side of things. The cabin lights work weird but thats about it.

I have compared mine to my old GSR and my GSR would cane it round corners and in a straight line but the VW pulls from the lights quite quickly without a problem and still seems to pull in 4th and 5th...

I have had no regrets about owning it and would quite possibly say it's one of my favourite cars I have owned. TBH, i think i would have a hard time going back to another Jappa...

It's the same with all Euros - you buy one knowing what it could possibly cost you in the long run due to parts.

if she wants a car for travel, get the dino, lots of room for "stuff" (myself and my friend can pack my entire caldina just for 1 weekend snowboarding lol). If she wants it just for around town, get the golf. They're cute and small, easy to park etc

can only add to what the other car industry people are saying, stay away from euro at all costs

sure some can be okay, but many are not (a higher % than jappas in my experience) NZ new ones seem to be a better bet if she simply must have the golf. i would want complete service history to make sure its been done according to the schedules laid out (apparently v important on the mark 5s)

as for low kms, we have a mark 5 golf at work at the moment with a screwed trans at 28k

also if it is an import kms are no indication of running time

avoid anything from singapore like the plague, no matter the savings

just my 2c from seeing years of imports rolling off the docks

Don't buy any cars from Singapore, even if Japanese.
Those people don't look after them. They just drive.
When I worked at car yard, we trialled importing of the Singapore cars, and every single one was a dog. Electrical problems, sludgy motors, transmission problems, no matter of the make or model.

We had occasional sludgy motors from Japan (which costs us dearly as sludge = rebuild to do properly), but generally we had good agents there that checked for those things. Saying that European cars don't take well Japanese driving.
If you must have a golf get a NZ new one preferably that did long highway drives (not in traffic).
And kms don't really matter on those things, not a VW but Audi (same thing as far as I am concerned) with genuine 30k had it's transmission imploded.
I am not sure about VW using CVT but make sure the car you get does not have one.

EDIT: VW does not use CVT, so ignore that...

i showed here the blade master g, she wants a first person view, but there is none in Christchurch. and its another 5-6g to shell out.
