If the driver uses his RIGHT foot to disengage the clutch, does that make it an automatic? :D

:lol: I was waiting for you to pick up on that haha

Interesting definition, but IMHO wrong. Manual simply refers to whether or not the driver determines when to change gears (hence manual mode on an otherwise automatic gearbox. It's got nothing to do with the use of clutches and who/what disengages them, it's got to do with who/what initiates the change of gear.

Agreed but generally the two go hand in hand. Even "manual mode" is not truly manual as a computer determines optimum shift point and disengages the engine from the transmission and physically shifts the gear - all the driver does is "order" a gear change........the actual changing is still controlled automatically.

Not always, ever heard of a preselector gearbox? Most defintely a manual gearbox, but often clutchless and the "gear shift pedal" replaces the clutch pedal

The best that could be described as is semi-automatic. Most computer controlled gearboxes, be they manual or automatic, only determine if the shift point requested is sensible, e.g. you're not trying to downshift at redline/upshift at idle. 99% of the time the gearshift happens at the point the driver requests it. i.e. It is a manual gear shift.

Regardless of any of this, your original definition fails as the final arbiter of the question as to whether the gearbox is manual or automatic.

That still doesn't change the fact that the Veyron has an automatic gearbox and has impressive off the mark acceleration for a vehicle with such which was the original point :P

To me:

Manual = Clutch

Auto = Torque converter.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

It operates when you tell it to by pulling on one of the flappy paddles :P

The Veyron has a manual (DSG) gearbox with an automatic mode. :P

Bikes aren't cars.

Obviously, but you are just being silly now - they are clearly running a gearbox and not auto :)

The average bike weighs in at ~200kg......getting it to go from rest to a marker 400m away in 10 seconds is hardly earth shattering stuff - several production bikes do it. A veyron weighs somewhere in the region of 2tonne.....Moving that much weight over the same distance in the time it takes to type this sentence is certainly nothing to be sneezed at. So while you may find it silly, I still don't think bikes have any place in this discussion :)

None of us directly manipulate the gears and clutch in a gearbox, they are all done by a bunch of levers etc - all cars must be auto!

The stuff i wrote came from Top Gear magazine. I think the record is 417khm for top speed. Got to love Dubai highways.

Dont recall ever reading those stats, but seeing as the magazine is tied in with the tv show,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk1t6S737Cs&feature=fvst

253mph (407km/h) top speed,
tyres last 15 minutes at top speed
fuel lasts 12 minutes
2011 Ford Mondeo tdci.

Hey, at least it sounds like a 3s.
