Sure he was speeding - but he only spun out because there was loose gravel on the side of the road, i.e. no curb or finishing edge

Which countries in particular?? I'd agree there are places with a lot worse roading than ours, but the majority of developed countries I've been to have been better, especially arterial routes. And Drivers are incompetent worldwide.
